Order and Disorder - Part 1, The Story of Energy 4k

Energy is vital, but what is energy? Host Jim Al-Kahlili investigates a strange set of laws that link everything from engines to humans to stars.

Jim Al-Khalili reveals how humanity discovered the rules that drive the universe and mastered the two most important concepts of the modern age – energy and information. As a follow on to the film "Everything and Nothing, the Science of Empty Space," this award-winning science show investigates the laws, from Einstein's General Relativity to quantum mechanics, that link the universe together.

Absolutely fascinating! 🔥
This documentary does an incredible job of explaining the concept of energy — not just as a scientific idea, but as a force shaping everything from the universe to our daily lives. The visuals in 4K are stunning, and the narration makes complex topics feel so accessible. I never realized how deeply energy and entropy are tied to the very structure of reality. Can't wait for Part 2!

👏 Huge respect to the creators for bringing science to life in such a compelling way.

"I don't believe that atoms exist" gives me a much better perspective on my research, #autaxys. As it turns out, Boltzmann's critic Ernst Mach may have had a point too. Entropy is simply a statistical property: disorder increases because of the multitude of ways in which it can (i.e. many more ways to break an egg than keep it together)

Love this guy. Love this channel. I'm new to this and physics. Blessed I found this channel. Thank you, the knowledge and visuals make life alot easier.

Outstanding opening question. The best intro I've ever heard.❤

Beautiful film. Very dark, bleak. I think the glimmer of hope at the end is quite futile. I actually am soothed by the notion of everything spreading and evening out. One day, my essence too will be less localized. I'll be spread over the landscape and part of e v e r y t h i n g.

Jim Al-Kahlili,
You are the most interesting professor that I have ever listen to. I'm not an engineer, but your documentaries are most interesting and understandable to me. You present them very well. I'm in aw of what you have brought to to my mind. Thank you.

Here's a good thought experiment for you. It was invented in a chat with me and Chat GPT. We have two hypothetical masses of gold colliding, where each of the two masses is 10 to the 56 kilograms, with 56 as the exponent base 10. And they are traveling at 9 billion kilometers per second. Each one is traveling at that rate. And they hit each other. That's enough energy to spawn the entire known universe according to chat GPT. I don't know about you, but with the Professor's illustrations using pool balls, somehow that seems to me not too hard to grasp. Furthermore, I believe that they would have to be precisely exactly dead-on center in order to collide in such a way.

Entropy makes life possible? That is a big stretch.

Heat is stored energy. What we call Organization is stored heat. Energy moves from hot to cold. That's why, what we call Organization becomes disorganized. Cold is the Organization. Heat appears as Disorganization to the universe.

Could a process of spherical 4πr² symmetry forming and breaking create entropy with the potential for greater symmetry to emerge?
Could this process form the potential for the complexity of cell life and the potential for music and evermore-abstract mathematics?
Do we need to go back to 1/r² and the three dimensional physics of the Inverse Square Law. Even back to the spherical 4πr² geometry of Huygens’ Principle of 1670 that says:
“Every point on a light wave front has the potential for a new spherical light wave".
Each point on the 2D boundary of the wave front can represent a new moment in time represented by a potential photon ∆E=hf electron interaction or coupling.

One man's entropy is another man's creation. Entropy doesn't tell us things are getting worse and worse because elements move from order to disorder in the evolution of ever changing environments. These ever changing events are only known in one place which one can notice never changes which one could say is our ability to notice but is usually called conscious awareness. It's worth noting that no thing has ever been found to exist outside of our own minds or one could say mind. Science says the Universe looks like a mind, one could say it looks like our mind because the evidence suggests it is our mind and is itself made entirely in our imagination.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
