This doesn't exactly make me want to rent an exotic car. The loss of use nonsense would bankrupt the average person. The rental company should have business insurance that would cover that just like any other business that had an incident happen where they had to close down for a period of time or whatnot.

Good points I did this when I had to get work done on my car. The rental company said anything size of quarter I took pictures of everything. Even of the inside because the door seal on one of he doors was falling off. They tried charging me upon return I showed them the pictures I took before leavin thier lot and they realized it was done before I took it. Pictures can save you a lot of money in the long run

I worked at Avis for a while. Pro tip time. 1. Don't try to rent with bad credit. Its just not going to work. You are wasting everyone's time. 2. Know what you are covered on. Loss of use was a good point here. Also think about possible towing expenses or things that you can't control like windshield chips and tire flats. Some don't come with a spare. Also the 14$ partial damage waiver is pretty worth it if you doing highway driving. Your deductible is probably more then the W/S. 3. The credit card hold takes place at the start and will charge at the end of the rental. They may hold extra. 4. Check tire pressure, I've found rentals with 80+ psi before. Damn I can keep going on for days

As an insurance adjuster all I can say is thank you, I wish I could force everyone to watch this video. Only one point of contention though, the loss of use is something that has to be a demonstrable loss to the rental company; ie if you damage a high end exotic and it was not reserved for the time the vehicle is being repaired prior to the repairs they can not purse loss of use. As a side note ERAC & Hertz have contracts with most major insurance carriers where they do not purse loss of use if the renter is insured with them.

Very good video. I actually had a situation that after picking up a RV.. did the walk around with an employee.. marked all the damages.. then in the evening someone pointed out a massive fold in the side of the front bumper.. I felt really bad as I had 1K deductible... but.. thankfully I had taken pictures of said RV on the parking lot of the rental company (building of the company with logo on the background so easily identifiable where I took them) and turns out the massive fold in the chromed bumper was already there.. We didn't notice it on the walk around as the angle of the sunlight on the chromed bumper and the shallow but weird shape of the fold actually obscured the damage, but it was easily identifiable on a picture taken from a 15 feet away from the vehicle. Saved me a grand!

I was once with a company that rented a van and bought rental insurance for the van through the rental company. This was a rental company called "West Coast VAN rentals". The van hit a deer while rented, and then the company tried to collect about $10, 000 from the company for damages. Oh, the insurance they sold had an area that specifically said the insurance was not applicable to VAN rentals. Lol.

I travel a lot and I never buy rental insurance and it finally bit me. So consider this when making your decision to get the insurance or not. I was driving down the highway in the middle of the night and hit two deers that were in the road and I couldn't see them until it was too late as I had just come over the crest of a hill. Car needed a hood. Headlight. Front fender and few other little things. My personal insurance DID cover it. BUT the rental company charges you for every day the car cannot be rented. So it was 7-10 days to get parts in and 2-3 days to repair it. So I ending up having to pay for almost 2 weeks rental at $99 a day. (Car was a Dodge Charger) so be aware. If I had the insurance from them I coulda just walked away from accident got in a new rental with no hassel. Instead I had to fight them for months and make hundreds of calls and get a lawyer. PS I still don't get thier insurance but I wanted to inform you guys of what can happen beyond just the cost of repairing the car.

I like how you mentioned any existing damage before you take your rental should be identified on the rental company's vehicle contract diagram. Besides taking my own pictures, I closely review that document. American Express, Chase, and Capital One charge companies have provided excellent coverage and support for rental vehicles when I used their cards. Allstate and Nationwide vehicle insurance providers have treated me well concerning rental vehicles for many years as well
