1500 Silverado differential problem

Silverado G80 differential locking mechanism problem occurs under 25 - 30 mph. Will post solution when solved, pretty sure its the locking mechanism.

I had no idea I'd have this many views and subscribers up to this point which is cool and thank you guys for taking interest in my video!

So I posted in the comments what the problem was but I'll write it up here too, it was the transfer! After all the troubleshooting I did with the diff the problem was fixed with an oil change to the transfer case. I replaced the diff with a limited slip type and problem still occurred. Then I remembered the service light for transfer was on but I ignore it! I didn't check out the transfer further then sold the truck, so my best guess is after lifting the truck for a tire change inclining the truck shifting the oil to one side with the transfer stationary, it shifted some components that were probably already worn causing them to go out of whack, causing this problem.

There's no load on the axle not spinning and when the lock engages it overspeeds the stationary wheel until the little bit of load there goes away at which point it unlocks. It's working fine 👍

Appreciate the video it shows a normally functioning GM Truck G80 locker rear differential. The pall just mechanically engages and makes a noise. A lot of problems with the G80 locker are caused by dirty oil. NOTE: DO NOT use the GM additive in the truck LOCKING axle the additive is only for the limited slip axles in the passenger cars. The additive can keep the lock clutches from engaging. Always interesting to see how things really work...

That gov lock is doing exactly what it's supposed to. If you watch the left axle isn't spinning and the right one is so the mechanism is trying to actuate the locker exactly as it's supposed to and they clunk when they engage. But you don't have it under enough load to keep it engaged so it's engaging and disengaging. I've had these diff's for years and even rebuilt them, there is nothing wrong in this video except the operator.

The G80 diff is good. had one drop a few axle bearings after a few years of off-roading tho.

I called Eaton who makes the G80. I was backing up in the grass on an incline and it went boom when it locked in. The guy told me it was totally normal. That G80 scares me!

For the life of me I can’t understand why someone would think a ‘service fed system’ would automatically be a rear differential problem. That said, 35 inch tires will blow the G80’s apart. Significantly higher inertia than stock wheel/tire combination.

My '05 G80 broke in '06 and was completely changed out with a new was told by the shop mgr....that the units containing some parts not of stainless steel was the know for sure however the replacement G80 has worked well since the shop replacement under 13 years later.

Forgot about this video... in case n e one was curious it turned out to be the transfer. Needed an oil change.

its really a good idea to run that without oil

If you're gonna beat on your truck, Gov-Loc might not hold up. Had one in my 2wd S10, it didn't hold up.
I didn't even beat on that truck. I didn't even take it off road or do burnouts with it. I towed a 1500lb boat & trailer. Some teeth broke off a little shaft inside. I put a Torsen in there out of a Camaro. Torsen is just as smooth and there's really nothing to break inside, no clutches to wear out. Got it used for $250.00.Another thing is that the clutches won't last the life of the vehicle with Gov-loc.They'll probably wear out by 100k. Clutches are worn out in my Explorer 8.8 trac-lok. It's got 150k on it but they been worn out for a long time. As long as you plan on keeping both tires on the ground I'd get a Torsen or a Tru-Track.

The pin with governor fly weight is bent or splines on pin is the problem.

Most likely not the transfer or the differential. The problem is most likely the left rear brakes are dragging. It's a brake issue.

Gm recommends synthetic fluid for rear diff .

Surely you didn't run an eaton g80 axle with no load on it over 10 mph. This is a LOW SPEED LOCKER.Thats means when you feel it lock, under load, released the gas and gradually get back into it.Over 20mph it unlocks, do not put any friction modifier in this unit. This is a FULLY LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL, NOT LIMITED SLIP.This is actually a very good locker.People hand grenade them by getting on pavement and stomping the goddamn accelerator to the floor. It is not a hot rod locker, it is a low speed truck locker.

I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 that is making a humming / vibrating noise when accelerating I was wondering if it is the differential .

man i get that clunk you had after letting the truck get going, only in first/second almost like there is play somewhere but cant pinpoint it - even setup a camera on the back Ujoint but no luck on anything
