What are the best strategies to protect my portfolio? I've heard that a downturn will devastate the financial market, so I'm concerned about my $200k stock portfolio.

I'm a low-income retiree. I have bought, and wish to sell a US stock in my TFSA account, and have a $10, 000 capital gain. Will I be taxed on this gain?

I live in Ontario, Canada. If I buy 50 stocks at $200 each, I will have invested a total of $10, 000. After 2 months, if the price of the stock increases to $250 and I sell 40 stocks, I will have recovered my initial investment, but I didn't make any profit in terms of money. Do I have to pay taxes?
