I did appreciate how Yasuke constantly harped on about how the community should share responsibility, especially with the children

I did like the idea behind the anime. However, I think they could have focused solely on Yasukes’ past, instead of showing flashes of it, and somewhat shifting the focus to the little girl with powers. We didn’t get to see him grow and develop as a samurai, which would have been great.

I knew about Yasuke for a while now. He is a very fascinating person in history. They say that he was either from Mozambique or what is known today as South Sudan.

He was actually in India for a bit before he went to Japan.

What is interesting is after the death of Oda Nobunaga no one knows for sure what happen to Yasuke.

If anyone is interested there is a book called African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan

Sweet. Am an African Otaku, and I am very interested in the Japanese. I discovered that the Japanese have a lot of traditions that we have in Africa too. Then their names such as Osaka which sounds like Lusaka (the capital city of Zambia). I would like to travel and do some research and see why, how, who, and when.

Given that a samurai saying is, “To be truly brave you must have a spot of black blood.” Would indicate that Yasuke was not alone.

You should make a video about these upcoming film and tv projects centered around African historical dramas, fantasies and sci fi stories too bro. Here are a few examples more people need to know about these.

There is "The Warrior Queen" epic film being produced by Universal Studios and Will Packer Productions about Kendake Amanirenas and her conflict with the Romans.

There are two Shaka Zulu series coming soon. One called "Shaka:Ilembe" being produced in South Africa by M Net and Bomb Production, and another called "Shaka King of the Zulu Nation" being produced in America by Showtime Network, CBS Studios, Propagate and Fuqua Films.

There is 'Who Fears Death' a post apocalyptic African fantasy by Nnedi Okorafor getting a HBO series adaptation, GRRM is executive producer. This same author also has another series she is having adopted by Hulu called "Binti"

There is "Imaro" a classic sword and soul African fantasy series by the late Charles R. Saunders. The author was working 16 years to get the series adapted but, unfortunately he passed away last year, but the series is getting a tv show finally, a producer called Taaq Kirksey mentioned that a pilot had been filmed already by the time the author passed away around May 2020. Its just a shame he won't be here to witness his creation manifested.

Anyway another examples is Tomi Adeyemi's "Legacy of Orisha" series which is being adapted by Lucas films as their first non-Star Wars or Indiana Jones series.

Amazon Prime is adapting Octavia E Butler books Black Sci fi novels "Wild Seed" and "Dawn". Octavia E Butler wrote some of the oldest sci fi books with black character protagonists too mind you back in the early 1980s and late 70s.

And two African fantasies have been optioned by Warner Bros and Michael B Jordan's company called Outlier Society. The first one is called "Kingdom of Souls", its a dark YA African fantasy by Rena Barron and another dark adult African fantasy called "Black Leopard Red Wolf".

N.K Jemisin's "Inheritance Trilogy" is getting tv series adaptation with Searchlight too.

Disney is creating their first African princess film "Sade" and, on Disney Plus they are making an African Afro-futurism sci fi series based in Nigeria in the future called "Iwaju" with indie comic company Kugali Studios.

And btw Samurai Jack had Benin like warriors in its show. Though they were depicted as jet black 😂 in that show.

Again, I appreciate this video and Mr. Thomas portrayal of Yasuke in the anime. The African shaman was my favorite along with Yasuke ideological mindset protecting children as you have stated. Well done.

I loved the series! I only wish that Netflix had given them like 5-6 more episodes to let the characters breathe. It was hard to care about anyone's endings except Yasuke just because we got so little time with them. Still, (spoilers) the end credit scene implied he went back to Africa, right? I'd love to see some high-flying action set in East Africa. Giant mecha battling African wizards and legendary monsters all centered around one Samurai trying to rediscover his home decades later.
