I truly believe Hawkeye hides his soft caring interior with his crude humor because he does not want people to see how vulnerable he truly is.

It's awesome how he actually respects her quite a bit. An example of how we don't always hear the things we want to hear the way we want to hear them.

I really loved the relationship between Hawkeye and Margaret. Hawkeye really cared for Margaret, with the occasional joke here and there. He was really someone she could confide in. I was so happy when Frank left the show. I have no doubt that Larry Linville was a great actor and a terrific person off camera, but his role as Frank Burns was just atrocious. His leaving really allowed Margaret and Hawkeye to quit their feuding and become good friends and made her a more likeable character.

I like that Margaret is made a decent person in the second half of the series. She was a sexist caricature of an uptight woman in earlier seasons (and especially the original movie).

He really did respect her, but he WAS Hawkeye, so he had to be snarky. And she saw his butt when she gave him the flu shot, so it was only fair.

I always got the feeling that those two really did love each other, but too afraid to admit it. Both put on a mask to hide their true feelings, neither of them want to be seen as vulnerable. At a different place, at a different time, those two could have been happy together.

Earlier in this season, every single time Frank hits on Margaret, he loses control of himself and tries to physically throw himself onto her. When Hawkeye sees her half naked ass, he comments on how hot she thinks she is, but doesn't grope her or try hard to make a pass at her. He gives her the shot with no actual physical assault. Despite his perverted nature, he's got a hell of a lot more self control than Frank ever would.
