The failure of Italy in World War II became a subject of jokes for the Germans. On October 28, 1940, Italy attacked Greece from the territory of occupied Albania. Mussolini was envious and angry about Hitler's successes, which he learned about not from him but from newspapers. It was decided to conquer Greece in a couple of weeks without coordination. However, the offensive failed disastrously. For example, the only elite Alpine division "Julia" was utterly defeated by the Greeks, who were significantly outnumbered. After mobilization began in Greece, the Greeks, now three times stronger than the Italians, pushed the occupiers back into Albanian territory. The Greeks advanced so quickly that the Germans joked that the French had put up information signs on their border that read:
"Greeks, advance no further- this is French territory". Mussolini criticized his soldiers, but his poorly planned attack was reckless from the start.
