Am a civil engineer in Vancouver and have been wanting to join the Navy (reserves) for years. This looks like an awesome experience for the fulltime route! Might have changed my education path if I saw this back in high school.

This is a brilliant idea. Especaily at a itme when many people know very little about the navy and what it does.

The Military Services in North America are having a hard time enticing young people to join up . I say hats off for thinking outside the box, trying out new ideas . Good for them . I think a lot of young people who try it out for one year will finish out their hitch as they're already a third of the way through a regular enlistment . If it doesn't work out go back to the old methods : but you have to try it to see if it works . Like to see follow up on this one .

No need for the program, in my youth I spent a decade in a mix of navy and sea cadets. Ranked up to chief petty officer 2nd class. Spent 3 weeks in Norfolk Virginia training, spent 3 weeks in comox B.C training and 2 weeks in Kingston
When I turned 18 I went to enlist and was denied due to my lack of a grade 12 education. I’ve tried 3 more times all with the same result.
You need soldiers who can take a order but deny them because you want those who are book smart.
Let me know when recruitment is legally required and I’ll happily serve my county, until then I’m not being denied again.

I would of liked to be apart of this program before applying for navy
since the Navy is the element with the least information on life in their element. There is no information on whats life aboard a canadian ship online

My applications been in limbo since I finished the required testing, was told in May to be ready to hear back right away since the NEP applications are prioritized, then nothing, just told to call every 30 days to get told that they're waiting for my medical form to get final approval. Don't believe them when they tell you it'll be quick, it won't be.

I am very interested, but I have some questions:

1. Once I chose a station, let’s say Victoria, do I still need to rent a place or it’s really food and accommodation provided?

2. If within 5 months, I realize the Navy does not suit me, can I just leave or does it have to be a full year?

3. Is it the same pay if I hold a bachelor degree?

Do you like McDonalds or Tim Hortons? Try the military police experience. Serve yourself at your local military base!

While this is a novel idea, and I have to give the Navy a little credit for it, how exactly is this going to work?

If candidates are going to see "Everything", it means that none of them will have reached their "Operationally Functional Point". Meaning they won't have the training to do any trade work, rather they'll just do many tasks under maximum supervision.

You'll need a large number to make this worthwhile. If you have even 100 candidates, how many experienced sailors/NCO's will you need to take away from their actual jobs to babysit them?

Will candidates sign for "Unlimited Liability"? This is a huge sticking point. They can't do anything operational, and even the nature of the training can be hazardous. Will they be entitled to VAC benefits if they're injured? Lots of liability here.

I find it interesting we're going to house them given that there isn't even enough housing for currently serving members. But that's a whole other discussion.

Lastly, the Navy has a real need to make this experience a "Good Go" in order to entice people into ACTUALLY joining the CAF. Which means if a candidate has a great time after a year and decides to stay and ACTUALLY join the CAF, they'll go to CFLRS in St. Jean; I gaurantee that most will Voluntarily Release in the first 24 hours of Basic Military Qualification because it will be a stark contrast.

Am I cynical and skeptical? Sure. But I feel these are pragmatic concerns.

I am Canadian and currently located abroad until this summer but want to serve the country.
Is there any way I can apply to this program from abroad?
