I bought my used 2014 Model S 85 back in Sept 2017 for $47, 500 on the Tesla website. It doesn't have any of the features other than a regular cruise control and heated seats. To me, that's ok!!! It drives like a regular car and I enjoy it very much. I got the Free Supercharging and 4 year 50k warranty on my used Tesla and that's what got me hooked. I've driven it for over 27k miles in a year and never paid for charging the car since January 2018. Since I got it used, I only had 2 issues that Tesla took care of right away.

Since my car only has the rear motor, the front trunk space is HUGE compared to a dual motor Model S. I put my Coleman cooler in the front with ice packs and drinks for those long trips. I've taken my car from the SF Bay Area to San Diego and Yosemite and Mammoth Lake with no problems. I'm going on a long road trip to Vancouver BC tomorrow and there are Superchargers everywhere along the route so I'm not concerned about finding a place to charge the car up.

My insurance is with AAA and I have full coverage for about $1200/year. That's not bad at all.

As for a charger at home, originally I was using the 110v outlet, then I created an extension cord from my 220v 3prong dryer outlet to use my mobile charger and that got me about 18 m/charge. Then I got a wall charger from Tesla for free because of one referral from my friend who bought his brand new 2017 Model S for $126k. It cost me $900 to install the wall charger in my garage and it's nice and very pretty. I just don't use it that much because I ALWAYS run down to a Supercharger for free. I will use the wall charger if I need to top off the battery for long drives anywhere but that's about it. The wall charger will get me about 25 m/charge. Yes, I could've sold the wall charger on eBay but I figured that it would add value to the house when I sell it to someone who has a Tesla as well.

After all that I've done and paid for (which really isn't much), I still love it. I wipe it down every other weekend with a wet towel in the garage and just admire the beauty of the car when I have time. Usually, after buying a car, I would already start looking on for my next car to own but instead, I just want to continue driving my car and enjoy the quiet comfortable ride along with the free Supercharging. There really is no other car I want!!! In fact, since I own a business and a van for work, I will immediately come home afterwards and get into the Tesla to do my personal business with enjoyment and knowledge that it's all FREE to me.

People ask me why a Tesla? FAST (free for me) SUPERCHARGING network throughout the US is already in place with more Superchargers being added monthly. Usually less than an hour to charge from near zero percent. AND IT LOOKS LIKE A REALLY COOL CAR!!! Volt is too small, BMW i3 is too weird, Nissan Leaf doesn't have enough range and all of them requires more time to charge up.

Finally, a car I really enjoy owning very much and have no desire to look at another car because my Tesla Model S is the "perfect" car. I don't care for the Model X because of the gull wing doors and the potential issues it MAY have in the future nor do I care for the Model 3 because it's too small for me.

And the cost to use it... parking and bridge tolls, that's it!!!!

And this is from a 62 year old car guy who's gone through so many cars in my lifetime.

I'm a day-one reservation holder. I picked up the Disco Volante (Flying Saucer) a couple of months ago. She is Midnight Silver Metallic Long Range with 19" wheels and Enhanced Autopilot. The day I picked her up I took her to get ceramic coated and the whole front, windshield, mirrors, and headlights covered with clear bra. I had the sills and rear bumper covered as well. They also covered the center console with wood-grain vinyl and the steering wheel and the piano black parts of the doors with carbon fibre. So much nicer!

This is my 3rd fully electric car, so I have 5KW of solar on my roof, and a charger. My electric bill is about $1 a month for my car and house. Couldn't be happier. The plan is to make this the last car I ever buy. When full autopilot actually works I'll get that too.

Oh, and full-coverage insurance is $399 every 6 months.

You're absolutely right about overspending for a Tesla. I've always bought used cars because it just makes more fiscal sense. but last year I bought a Chevy Bolt and fell in love with the EV. Now I'm willing to overspend on the ultimate Ev. I will be picking up my Model 3 performance on 09/22. Is that crazy?

Lol if i m spending $100k on a car (X or S) then i can probably afford insurance, electrician, and sure, vinyl. you make it sound like people who can't afford the car itself won't be able to afford the peripherals...no shit.

I have to be "that guy". I have a Model 3 Long Range. Right now I'm temporarily charging it on a 110 outlet and not the best wiring either. I only get about 116 volts at 12amps. I'm able to get about 5 miles per hour which nets me about 45-50 miles charge in 10 hours over night. For me, with a 22 mile round trip to work and home, that's more than enough for my daily commute.

Is 220 better? hell yeah, but living with 110 is doable for many people with the Model 3. Model S isn't as efficient, so yeah, you're looking at 2-3 miles per hour.

1. Many people charge their Teslas just fine with a 120V outlet + maybe once a week they go to a Supercherger or public charger
2. Insurance for Teslas should already be quite cheap, and it's about to get a lot cheaper, as Tesla is opening its own body repair shops
3. Tesla is 100% right to not sell parts to unauthorized personnel. A recent survey showed that the big majority of repair shops don't follow OEM recommended repair procedures, which can be fatal for Teslas, undermining structural rigidity and electrical safety.
4. Taxes are usually universal for all cars, you pay the same amount for a 80K USD Audi as for a 80K USD Tesla
5. Bjorn Nyland from Norway found some cheap Chinese tires which last for 2x more miles than Michelin, GoodYear...etc. with just slightly worse traction
6. My favorite configuration is Model 3 Long Range AWD for 55K USD, standard wheels, cheapest paint, no autopilot. 0-60mph in 4 seconds and good traction in the winter ;)

Great video! 🤘 I just ordered my all-white Model 3 Performance fully spec’d out last week and am already getting it delivered tomorrow somehow! Luckily my landlord just ordered one as well so they had no prob with me installing a NEMA outlet in the garage! My insurance did go up from $115 for my Nissan Cube to $200 for the M3 and my premium doubled to just over $1k! Wasn’t expecting such a jump but that’s what happens with Tesla’s I guess! 😅

We have 2 model S cars 4 years old now, and have made reservations for 2 model 3 cars. Just drive and wash, no fancy stuff here, basic but they work and that is what counts for us.

I use a standard 110 outlet. Charges 4-5 miles each hour, not 3. Landlord will allow upgrading to 220 at my expense. This video is spot on, especially the temptation to personalize. Went with matte wrap, and it's gotten a lot more heads turning.

"A lifestyle statement" absolutely agreeing with Couldn't care what others would say. It's more than a statement, its a way of life and living. I would love a blue Model S performance with white seats. 19" Black wheels

Hit most valid points, I have a model s 85 with 21” rims, smart air suspension, tech, etc. Great car so far, customer service has been out of this world and I average 1k miles a week. Just hit 100k and it’s only cost about $125 over the last 40k to power it. No regrets.

I have currently bent three rims hitting medium sized potholes. Insurance rates are TWICE the cost of my 2013 M3 I had, but overall the car is the most economical choice for me given the amount I drive.

Ideal spec is a P85DL with executive rear seats in brown metallic with grey 21” staggered rims.

I got/ordered a used Model S 70D in late Feb 2019. Picked it up in Bellevue and drove to Lacey, yo. My advice if you can charge at home on 240v; get a used Model S or X from Tesla.com and spoil yourself for any other brand. If you're a Toyota person, you'll be exploring the cheapest, oldest Tesla for a month, even if has minimum extras. Some are cheaper than $30K. Look into it.

Tesla Model X with the 6 seat for the family, with next year's refresh red leather and the whatever the new maximum size battery will be (hopefully on 2170). No performance option, cause it's still stupid fast, and the cheap small tires that are more durable.
