Why was a Pig put on trial in Medieval Europe? (Strange History)

Over five hundred years ago, the small French village of Savigny was rocked by a horrific tragedy. Unaware of the coming danger, a five-year-old boy happily played alone in the street. But then, out of nowhere, a group of attackers accosted the young child, tearing off his head and arms without hesitation. It was broad daylight and the bold killers made no attempt to conceal their crime.

The city of Wittlich celebrates a Säubrennerkirmes (Pig burning / roasting fair) every year since 1950. It goes back to a medival tale where one night the city gate was locked with a turnip because the wooden plank went missing. That night a pig ate the turnip, the enemy outside saw that the gate was open, charged in and burned down the city. After that the people gathered all the pigs, burned them and then ate them.

This reminds me of something I saw on reddit years ago of a parrot getting arrested for being in the bake of a robbery. They even censored it's little face when TV crew arrived to interview.

In ancient rome getting killed by a an inanimate object was considered murder too instead of an accident there was trials against the objects and once dictated the sentence they were exiled from the city or village they were because it was believed objects, animals or persons that commited crimes carried some sort of pestilent cloud that infected others and make them commit crimes too.
