Money In Relationships | Don't Let Money Break You Up!

Unfortunately, more and more people in our culture deal with issues related to money in relationships. Sometimes issues with money in relationships come up because one of the partners feels overwhelmed by the responsibility of having to provide. Or, other times it’s because one of the partners doesn’t have good financial habits. And other times it’s because people have different lifestyles and expectations. And that’s ok, but you need to learn how to ensure that money doesn’t break up your relationship that could potentially be healthy and loving.
The first and most important element is to make sure that you understand and recognize why money broke your common life project. You need to not only take a step back and take accountability for your shortcomings and the things you could have done better, but you also need to take a step back and understand your partner’s perspective, their values, their upbringing, and their relationship with money. If you stay centered around your perspective and if you have these blinders on, ultimately, you’re going to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. And the best thing that you can do after a break up is to learn from that experience in order to help you become a better person, and potentially a better partner.
Once you’ve identified what the issue is, we need to come up with a plan to make sure you develop better habits or more realistic expectations or more financial IQ in order to ensure that you won’t keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
Ultimately, once you’ve developed this plan, the next step is to take action. It’s not just an intellectual exercise. It’s about patterns and habits in your day-to-day to become that new and improved version of you. Once you’ve started to take action, the next step is to make sure that you bring yourself to account.
It’s not good enough to have a plan and take action. You need to constantly take a step back to see how you are improving, if you are staying focused on this plan, or if you are deviating.
And once you’ve done all of that, once you’ve understood what went wrong, taken action to improve yourself, once you’ve changed and developed better financial IQ, and once you’re more in tuned with your partner’s financial expectations, or perhaps when you’ve started to take responsibility for yourself, and you’re more financially independent, then the fun part begins. Then we can work together to rebuild a bridge, to re-establish communication, and to prove to your significant other that you are that person that they dreamt of being with. Because when you first started dating, your partner wasn’t just focused on what you don’t do well, or the financial issues that plagued your relationship. They saw the potential in you. They saw the person that you could be. They saw a potential relationship that could make them happy. And because of the changes you will have made, you will become that potential special someone again.
