A.A. Milne's poem Halfway Down is a great poem for reminiscence and childhood memories. It reminds us of the time we had as children to sit, contemplate and 'just be'. The halfway down step was our little space of calm and independence.

A.A. Milne (1882–1956) was an English author and poet. He is most famous for his Winnie the Pooh books and for his childrens' poems featuring Christopher Robin. His first book of poems was called When We Were Very Young (first published in 1924) and this poem is from that anthology.

'Halfway Down'
by A.A. Milne

Halfway down the stairs
Is a stair
Where I sit.
There isn't any
Other stair
Quite like
It.

I'm not at the bottom,
I'm not at the top;
So this is the stair
Where
I always
Stop.

Halfway up the stairs
Isn't up
And isn't down.
It isn't in the nursery,
It isn't in the town.

And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run round my head:
"It isn't really
Anywhere!
It's somewhere else
Instead!"
