I heard acetaline gets too hot and some of the gold evaporates if your not careful. A lot of people use it, but you can get it too hot and a little bit will evaporate. I love the potato thing though. Crucibles always have gold stuck on the sides. Try using mapp gas with a nice handheld torch end to screw on the bottle. See how much you loose then. If you already melted that and lost 4.5 grams...that's like $180-$200 Buckaroos. Mapp gas is the way to go. Or acetaline but hold back a bit.

You took too much way too much potato out. If you leave more than half of the potato in and just make a nice little bowl then it will take longer for you to boil all the moisture and water out of the potato meaning it will take a lot longer for the Potatoe to start to burn.😉
Ps. Try it one time without the flux and just let the starch in the natural properties of potato work for you.
Pss.
Try burning inside of the potato carbonizing and charcoaling the potatoes before putting any material in the potato..

Can't help thinking you are just wasting gas drying out the potato. A wood block or charcoal would be more efficient and a quicker melt.
