D&D 5E - When the DM changes the Lore

Check out Heliana's Guide to Monster Hunting and it's kickstarter!

dungeons and dragons has such a cool lore that players cant avoid reading all about it! in fact they cant even forget it, which can lead to awkward situations where the dungeon master homebrews and or changes something about the lore and players try and correct it... and then correct one another... and then... well it never ends!

I like to think that the players aren't metagaming, their characters are actually confused.

Meanwhile my players are more interested in the dynamics of my settings wine industry than in the actual lore.

You know the party has issues when the boss is willing to just leave them alone

When the party somehow remember the unplanned BBEG more than the planned real BBEG

it's like metagaming except it deals psychic damage to the dm and puts every player that dares challenge the lore lawyer under the effects of the confuse spell

I ran into this "problem" when my group let loose an ancient god of Hatred that had been imprisoned by the other celestials for going past being just the god of war. I let them know, "certain parts of history were erased in hopes that it would prevent this monster from ever being free again."
In other words, "people lie, in fact they do it a LOT." Hell, one demon actually was using the god of war's real name thinking it would make her more revered when she revealed her true identity.
There are no mistakes when you worldbuild, you just need to remember the rules of consistency and players need to remember that not everyone remembers everything and the bad guys are LIARS; it's what MAKES them the bad guys.

People assuming that it's always the same fantasy world can get to the nerves of any DM, the firs session of Eberron campaigns tend to be convoluted with people thinking that way.

"oh my god... their all gonna die"

*As a DM.... I get that. I really get that.*

I think we would all be less critical of DMs, if we had to remember everything that they have to remember.

One of my DMs infamously retcons every time he thinks of a better idea.
Fortunately it tends to be small enough not to affect the party's overall goal, though, or fast enough that we can adjust.

A lot of gods in ancient mythology are capable of shapeshifting....

The ONE time I knowingly try to change something (and not completely forgot about it by mistake). The ONE TIME somebody ACTUALLY took notes!! And then it's a plot hole which needs fixing. But they remember now. It's all to late.
