[Game of Theories: #16] Social exchange theory was developed by both social psychologists and sociologists. Since the 1960s, social exchange theory has been widely used by scholars in different disciplines to understand human social behavior. Social exchange theory has evolved considerably over time. It is no longer a single “theory” but rather a family of distinct conceptual models of interpersonal and social interactions, including, but not limited, to economic and employment relationships. The diversity of conceptual models has also come with a cost because those conceptual models are not always closely aligned. It presents a challenge for future researchers to refine the theory. There are four major themes of social exchange theory: interdependent interactions, self-interest, rules of exchange, and the formation of interpersonal relationships.
