Americanization and globalization have basically been the same thing for the last several generations. But the US's view of the world -- and the world's view of the US -- is changing. In a fast-paced tour of the current state of international politics, Ian Bremmer discusses the challenges of a world where no single country or alliance can meet the challenges of global leadership and asks if the US is ready to lead by example, not by force.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

As an American, I don't think this country is fit to lead the world.

I like how 90% of the comments are from people who obviously didn't listen to anything that Ian said.

What if the world doesn't NEED an Americanization? What if America doesn't NEED to be the world's sheriff?

Everyone who hates what the US has done, take a look at the way Economies functioned in the Imperial System, and the exploitation by Imperial Powers, then do a good amount of research in to "Bretton Woods" where the US provides the security for ALL trade in the World and opens their markets. Then, think about what happens when the Americans STOP protecting ALL trade in the world and everyone is responsible for themselves, in a world with a shortage of energy resources. You'll be begging the Americans to stay if you do the research, or if you don't buy what you see, when we do withdraw and the world falls in to conflict, you'll wish we didn't stop caring about the rest of you.

Not sure I agree with the speaker entirely but I definitely enjoyed his mannerisms. His tone is most like a sports announcer select his draft picks for the season. It helps emphasize the absurdity world super powers in the modern day while still appealing to nationalism to gain the audience's attention.

a very annoying speaker I must say. I find his manners of speaking about world issues inappropriate. all in all, Americans should stop agonising about world leadership and start focusing on internal problems: huge national debt, unemployment, housing etc. what he means by Americanisation is simply world spread of consumerism. You know according to a typical American I'm out of this world simply because I have no debts. at all. none. zero. and that is empowering factor. so get the right focus.

USA needed a big shakeup - too many fat 'old school' life politic-ers wanting to keep what is and never has been theirs. So greed has hurt the country & the workers.
Change now going to happen, for better or worse.
Just hope violence stays low.

Is this guy drunk? I wish the world learned something from the WWI and WWII, for example, that all people on earth and, consequently, all nations, should be equal. People of the "the greatest nation in the world" should open their eyes and realise what their leaders are doing, whereas the rest of the world should be more independent, especially Europe, who currently doesn't have its own voice.
