Back in the day (late 70's) beards were allowed for E4 and above. All you had to do was put in a special request chit with you division officer. If he approved you usually had 30 days to grow it. If after 30 days if it wasn't a full beard your LPO would usually pull your chit. Then in the early 80's some jackleg CNO did away with beards.

When I was in the Navy I had an old Salty 1st class who was in Vietnam and then got out for over 10 years and then he came back in. He said people grew beards in the Navy and had no problem with the seals with the SCBA and gas masks because they used vasoline to make that seal happen. He said they got rid of the beards in 1983 andreason why was because women were starting to come in the Navy more and appear on more ships. I could see there being a fire issue with the vasoline.

Awesome video! I’m only 14 right now but plan on joining the Navy as soon as I get out of high school. My great grandpa served in ww2. My grandpa served in the army. My mom and dad served in the Air Force. And I look forward to continuing the tradition by joining the navy. Your videos keep me up to date on the navy and I really enjoy watching. Love the content! Cheers.

Interesting video. Back when there was a comedy t.v. show called CPO Sharkey both my Navy recruiters had well trimmed beards. Later on when I was stationed in Sicily bushy beards were quite common. The Navy then had a bad crash on the Nimitz and drugs were revealed to have been in some of the dead flight deck crewmembers bodies. The Navy began working on restoring more pride and professionalism to it after that. A few years later when I was in the Air Force in Iceland the Navy people stationed there and In the rest of the Navy had to shave off their beards.

TO all below, I got out in April of 73 .I  understand JT was not even born yet. I looked up in my old NAVY gear and found the " z ' gram If I could  show you I would. I didn't serve under the new CNO.IN WW2 depemding on the command there were stashes allowed.. so it is nothing new . I knew quite a few sailors that served in WW2 that had stashes.

I basically enlisted with a no-shave chit(I probably shaved less than 10 times while I was in.). I think it's a good idea if they kept the regulations as it is while allowing beards. The instruction says that you can't cut your beard into a faddish style, you have to let it grow in naturally. The beard can't be longer than a 1/4 inch, which I've found doesn't interfere with gas masks, SCBAs, or EABs.

In the Air Force some can get a medical waiver to grow their beard to a 1/4 inch but they ‘can’t’ line it up or style it. I’d like to grow a beard because we don’t even wear gas masks very often and studies have shown beards don’t even interfere with use of it.

Bruh I'm leaving tomorrow for basic. If only I could grow a proper beard.
