Music Theory For Guitarists

You only really need music theory if you are in a hurry to sound more musical. And luckily you actually don't need a lot.

Diatonic really just means, "from one key". And while that sounds a bit constrained, understanding how keys are generated, and then being able to really leverage all that information, is the first step to really understanding how music actually works on your instrument.

I have friends who will try to point out that Paul McCartney never studied theory as a pushback against having to understand even the rudiments, even though it is apparent Sir Paul intuitively knows tons of theory because of his musical genius.

My answer is always, "Yeah, but if you were like Paul McCartney, we'd already know it..."

Here I thought playing the guitar was supposed to be fun. Too bad nobody could ever tell me what I needed to do to make it fun. I guess that’s why I just quit.
