antiX 19.2 Review – Good for Old Computers

Looking at antiX 19.2.1 “Hannie Schaft”, which is a lightweight systemd-free Linux distribution based on Debian Stable. It’s suitable for 32bit and 64bit systems, and can be run on 20 year-old Pentium III with 256MB RAM.

When I was a teenager I had a Pentium 1 laptop that I got for cheap (all that I could afford at that time) and found it most useful as a linux client to my desktop for programming in vim and the like. I installed gentoo on that thing, compiled by my desktop. 12 Mb of RAM used idling on the desktop.

I installed AntiX19.2 Full Version on my old Compaq NX6320 Laptop with 2GB Ram. It runs very well and I have not seen it use more than 800MB of RAM. Also the Fan hardly goes except when watching Movies on Full Screen that use the DRM decoder or 1080p HD on YouTube. If not shown in Full Screen then the Fan goes silent again. I installed ShotWell and VLC and very much like the way my Laptop runs. I have tried many Linux Distros and while this is not fully featured as some I find it really good. Took me a while to get access to a Windows Shared Laser Printer on my Print Server, via Samba, but I did succeed. Also I use WiFi. I have six computers on my Home Network. Some Wired and some WiFi. One is a Web Server running XUBUNTU 16.4 LTS. Still working on getting access to Windows Shared Disk Folders and having Windows access folders on my AntiX19.2 Laptop.

If you dont like rox file manager you can switch to spacefm wich is like pcmanfm like(with a few tweaks)....and you will be impressed!!!

Do you recon that it is lighter and faster than Lubuntu?
i have Lubuntu on a Pentium 3 M laptop with 2gb ram so my biggest constrain is cpu
and for some reason Lubuntu is an order of magnitude slower than the windows xp i dual boot with, mainly due to random apps hogging randomly 100% of the cpu.

Great review! How can I change the resolution from 1024x768 to 1920x1080? Mine shows 1024x768 is the max, which is unusable for me and I couldn't change it.

Is this distro worth it for me ? I intend to create a portable linux install for absolutely any PC(although at moment i have access to 2 computers, both of which have 3Ghz+ i5s and 8GB RAM), and am going to use KDE PLASMA... so are there any real performance benefits or should I not use a complex environment if I want compatibility with the lowest tier hardware ?

Do Antix linux good for modern hardware too? Are there any packages that are restricted or can't be installed here? I saw Firefox EMS, is the software package different from Debian or other Ubuntu families? Help.. please answer.. is it good to be the main os?

I don't understand the name "AntiX". Does the system not use XOrg? I don't get it.
