What should Canada be doing with returning ISIS fighters and their families?

As the U.S. moves ahead with plans to pull out of Syria, President Donald Trump is calling on allies to repatriate their foreign fighters.

But as the Canadian government prepares for the upcoming election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seems less enthusiastic about addressing returning ISIS fighters and their families as he did four years ago.

De-radicalization expert Mubin Shaikh tells Mercedes Stephenson if Canadian ISIS fighters and their families are not allowed to return to home and sent to Iraq, they might be executed.

Mr. Speaker, section 46 of the Criminal Code talks about offenses against public order. In fact, it talks about treason in particular. Section 46 states: “Everyone commits high treason who in Canada assists an enemy at war with Canada or any armed forces against whom Canadian Forces are engaged in hostilities, whether or not a state of war exists between Canada and the country whose forces they are…”

Furthermore, Mr. Speaker, I would like to quote from section 83.2 of the Criminal Code which states: “Everyone who commits an indictable offence under this or any other Act of Parliament for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with a terrorist group is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life.”
