This was Kwame Nkrumah, a towering figure whose vision and determination ignited the flames of independence across Africa. As the first leader of a free Ghana, he boldly championed Pan-African unity, envisioning a continent unshackled from the chains of colonialism.

Yet, as he rose to become one of Africa’s most influential voices, Nkrumah's relentless pursuit of his ideals also sowed the seeds of his downfall. His story is one of triumph and tragedy, where the fight for Africa's future collided with the harsh realities of power, leading to a dramatic downfall.

Hats off to Ghana !! The one and only African nation where power peacefully transferred from one party to another in 2001 when Jerry Rawlings stepped down at the end of his second term. In other African nations this never happened before. Well it did happen in Botswana, but it was the same party. The election was clean and fair. Considering Ghana's past history of military coups I call it a great step forward where the U.S. could take a lesson from where the presidential elections are not considered fair by international standards.

He made the mistake of seeing his survival as the survival of his nation. If he had devolved powers rather than centralizing them, his legacy may have endured more fully.

Here is what I notice about dictators. They often come into position with good intentions, but like King Saul, they eventually lose sight of who put them in position and fail to draw the line of "what's best for me" vs. "what's best for the country." Power corrupts, and it takes a strong man to admit when his time is up. I often use the analogy of Mugabe and Kaunda. Kaunda gave up when elected out on f office and died a hero, while Mugabe died a lonely and vilified man.

The west was not afraid of Nkrumah.
Infact America facilitated loans to finance akosombo dam built by Italian engineers.
At independence, if ghana had a humble and meticulous leader like lee kuan yew of Singapore, ghana now would be like Singapore.
While lee kuan yew was busy laying strong foundations for the future growth of his newly independent country and didn’t have time for the problems in his neighborhood Vietnam.
Nkrumah, on the other hand, from far away west Africa, leader of a newly independent country without basic infrastructures such as roads and highways, had time to travel to Vietnam on peace mission.
On his way to Vietnam, his dictatorial and oppressive government was toppled by the ghana Army and police.
The one and only coup mastermind by the army and police in ghana.
Currently, ghana doesn’t have a single highway running from south to north or east to west.
Instead of Nkrumah, deploying the army of his newly independent country of six million people and more importantly without basic infrastructures such as roads and highways to help spearhead a revolution in new roads and highways construction across their newly independent country, Nkrumah rather deployed them in Congo to fight.
Ironically, the soldiers Nkrumah deployed in Congo to fight, returned to ghana to overthrow his dictatorial and oppressive government.
Had Nkrumah had the vision of humility to adopt a peaceful option of negotiations for total liberation of Africa and engaged his soldiers at home to help execute national and patriotic duty of new roads and highways construction across their newly independent country, the practical task of helping to construct new roads and highways in their newly independent country, would have prevented them from planning to overthrow Nkrumah.
And Nkrumah would have had the necessary political stability to accomplish his dreams for ghana and Africa.
Nkrumah’s misplaced priorities, hypocrisy and arrogance precipitated his ultimate downfall.
Neocolonialism is a hoax and scapegoat for post colonial Africa’s underdevelopment.
For Africa to develop good governance is the key, not myopic governance exhibited by Nkrumah, and ability to extract and add value to our natural resources in Africa.
