Communities buried in mud in hard-hit North Carolina

Days after the flooding catastrophe caused by Hurricane Helene, people confronted the enormous destruction in communities largely buried in mud. Some were still searching for loved ones. Running water could be cut off for weeks or months, and finding food was a problem for some. NBC News' Sam Brock reports.

I went to Asheville in May and its a beautiful community of working class folks. I'm devastated that they have to go through this. May God be with them. Our federal government needs to provide all resources necessary to help these folks.

I have experienced many storms in my life with Category 5 at best. I’ve experienced now electricity for 2-3 months. Thank god we have pump well that has clean water. Donate federal dollars to disaster victims. Not waste money on wars that we don’t need anyways

Along with standing water and mud will come bacterial growth, mosquitos and the increased potential for disease. Their medical community should prepare for disease prevention and infectious care for residents. Also cleaning up all that muck, mud and debris can lead to illness and injuries of all kinds. Their medical community needs to prepare for that also.

President Biden did preposition Starlink systems and precertified emergency directives in preparation for Hurricane Helene. Prior to the storm's landfall in September 2024, the Biden-Harris administration took proactive steps to support emergency efforts, including pre-positioning personnel, equipment, and resources. This included deploying dozens of Starlink systems to North Carolina and other affected areas, ensuring reliable internet connectivity for first responders and residents. Over 100 additional Starlink units were also in transit to further aid recovery efforts after the storm.

In addition to Starlink, the administration approved pre-landfall emergency declarations for multiple states, including North Carolina. These declarations authorized federal resources, such as FEMA's teams, to assist with emergency protective measures and provide aid. Federal personnel were deployed before the storm, and resources like power restoration teams, meals, water, and medical assistance were staged in advance
