Over the last decade, Fall Out Boy has fostered a legacy that’s become synonymous with the emo-pop scene of the early aughts. The band returned earlier this year with their seventh studio album ‘M A N I A,’ incorporating electronic sounds and lyrics filled with references to pop culture.

While Fall Out Boy has evolved through a slew of material, it’s impossible to forget where the fandom originally began. “Thnks fr th Mmrs” was one of their crossover hits, peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2007.

Written by members Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz, the ‘Infinity On High’ track is also produced by R&B hitmaker Babyface–who worked on their song “I’m Like A Lawyer With The Way I’m Always Trying to Get You Off (Me & You),” as well. “Thnks fr th Mmrs” revolves around themes of a broken relationship but it also contains critical commentary towards society’s obsession with fame.

I love how he just doesn't even acknowledge "he tastes like you only sweeter" like dude no that's why I'm here

Me: Hi, how are yo—
Pete: You know, like, whatever—you know—when you’re on a plane and you get off, but then you’re like “whatever, I’m cool”? Yea.

The only thing I learned from this is that this song does not directly reference Hitler

Look at this man. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He doesn’t remember anything about why he wrote this song, he’s making it up on the spot

Patrick said it in an interview that Pete talks like this. Like in metaphors and analogies. He's so used to it that he understands what Pete is trying to get across in their music. And even though Pete is the lyricist, he sends Patrick _lines_, not the actual lyrics of a whole song. Patrick forms the lyrics within the song he has in mind and writes the lyrics that rolls off better in your tongue when you sing it. Also, Patrick said in an interview that 'Thnks fr th mmrs' was a whole completely different song from what they had in mind when they worked with Babyface. Babyface produced this song that's why it has more variety than a simple pop punk song. It's not that the meaning is lost but their original conception for this song may have been buried with all the r&b and string influence that even Pete won't remember what the song originally meant.

I think what made FOB & P!ATD music so great is that their lyrics were never explained but you understood them somehow. Basically unexplainable poetry. You either get it or you don't lol

I feel like I’m crazy. Am I the only person that know exactly what he means? I know the feelings he’s trying to express. He’s not explaining the literal meaning of the song, he’s trying to use analogies to explain how it feels to be in the story he is telling. It’s a song about the anxious feeling of uncertainty, and regret from finding out that things aren’t what they are meant to be. In the song, he has a hard time conveying his real self, so it leads to these shallow relationships, like one night stands, or gossip magazine pictures. This same anxiety makes him worry about the future, but he can only look back on his regrets in the past, and watch as a helpless observer. To make himself feel better, he goes out to these parties to find girls, but it never brings him the happiness that it is meant to, and thus repeating this cycle.

Most of the comments here are about why they would get Pete to talk about a decade old song, but I’m more interested in whether anybody understood what he was babbling about.
