as a pet store employee, this is absolutely accurate!
also, if you notice that any fish at a pet store look particularly sick with contagious diseases (ich, parasites, etc) dont buy ANY fish from that store on that day, because a lot of pet stores have tanks with connected water systems.
the biggest lesson is to just always quarantine new fish!

hiii!! i actually work at a pet store! we get one shipment in every two week of pet fish and one shipment a week of feeder fish they are incubated and put into the display tanks then our display tanks are marked as “sick” for 24-48 hour and we monitor to make sure we have no sick fish! if we do they get removed and special care in the rehab section of the store!! (this is definitely not that case for every single pet store and our store is considered “high quality care”)

This time around I decided to buy from breeders and my 21 fish are doing great and so healthy! Mostly bluegill and sunfish so they're hardy but these ones are so healthy. I appreciate your channel so much! It got me back into my love for aquariums and has given me some great tips. In the progress of a koi pond rn as well! Thanks luke!

This is always a good thing to remind people about. The temptation to put new fish in with the ones you have already can be very strong, but it's so worth the wait!

I got my fish from my local reptile shop. When I was going to get an oranda goldfish I went to Petco for whatever dumb reason and bought a fish with a bunch of hookworms because they wouldn’t let me look at the fish before I bought it. Then I went back and returned the fish and went down to my local reptile store because they also have a large fish selection and I was able to get a healthy goldfish. :) and also to your argument about pet store not quarantining their fish, it depends on the fish store. My local shop, Alan’s Pet Center, has many large quarantine tanks and they take great care of their fish. :)

I breed mollies, and I've only had a few problems with pet store fish fortunately. With first trip, I got three black velvets and some guppies and tetras.(was not breeding then) well, the guppies died. So did the tetras. And one of the black velvets had a health problem, and then my tank ended up with velvet. Whoo. Then I went back and got a few more mollies, and a few months later for a few more types. I've had four successful drops since, and they're doing pretty good. Just as Luke said, quarantine/deworm. You don't know if the fish have anything, and you want to make sure they're nice and healthy before introducing them to your current fish.

I work at a pet store and I’m proud to say we only get a shipment of fish once a week from the exact same qualified breeder. We almost never have any problems. As you said we can’t isolate the fish when we get them so they do go straight into the display cases. But once we notice the slightest things with our fish they will not be sold until we get them through treatment. It is true that multiple pet stores don’t actually do this which I think is ridiculous. Proud to say ours are pretty safe🥰

So thankful for my local shop. They have individual 20-40 gallon display tanks with their own filters and heaters. They quarantine new shipments for a few days and will mark a tank as not for sale if they are medicating it.

Have to vouch for my local pet store! They actually Quarantine the fish in the display tanks. AND you can reserve one in the tank while they still Quarantine and pick them up once they're ready.

One pet store that I’ve cherished recently is this newer place called pet supplies plus they have been popping up over the Midwest and they take so much better care of their fish than petmsart/petco. They quarantine and everything I was actually refused the sale of a fish because they were quarantining and treating there new shipment. AMAZING

This is so very true. Most of the time I've only seen symptoms of parasitic infection, which I always treat and quarantine. But just recently, I had bought a trio of peacock gudgeons from petsmart and 2 of them were very plump. Which I thought perhaps they were simply gravid, but sadly, the smallest died before I could get the right meds and I actually watched a tapeworm crawl out from the dead fish that I had taken out and set aside to be thrown away after I finished treating the tank. I am pretty sure it was a tapeworm. I've seen plenty come from my cat, and this one looked very similar. Which could explain why the meds I had on hand didn't work as it treated roundworms. Anyway, although I never take my chances, I definitely won't ever get lazy about it in the future. I also came here to say to make sure you have more than one option as far as meds and deworming goes. As not all dewormers are going to be effective against all worms.

Yeah, it's even more mind-blowing when you know that snails, shrimps and even plants can carry parasites and diseases. And the diseases and parasites can spread via nets, water and even our hands. My friend, who I asked to help care for my betta, used a shared net in my tank and their guppy tanks, which spread columnaris to my betta. We both lost fish...

My local store quarantines most fish for a short but good enough period of time. They keep them in the display tanks just without prices, but if you're determined, you can still ask to buy them and they'll always answer questions about their health and such.

I've actually got a couple female amber mollies in a quarantine/therapy tank right now. That male sailfin molly I got about a year ago, Tupor Saint Milk, had lost all of his previous partners over the past few months (I've had 'em for almost four years, and all died of old age over the past three months).

Note: Mollies are the long(ish) yellow freshwater fish you see somewhere in the middle of the video. If they're fairly healthy, they'll be energetic like they were in the video here. Mollies are extremely friendly fish, and I absolutely love them!

My local pet store has quarantine tanks in the back for new fish. It says on the tanks to not buy the fish in them either. I love my local

There’s a privately owned store near my house, he’s pretty much the only guy I’ll buy fish from unless the local store has something amazing for cheap and or angelfish for cheap. For instance I got a super red dragon flowerhorn for 25 bucks from the local petco the other week. When they have angelfish for 5-6 bucks I snatch them up too. But the private store actually does have separate water for every tank in his store it’s quite astounding, his fish and plants are always of the best quality but you definitely pay for it. However I believe it’s worth it.

Thats why fish stores don't do It, It takes a "long" time and the costumers can't Just wait all that time, also as he pointed out in the video, don't be lazy, quarantine them yourself.
