What? This is a shortened version that deletes the final verse which is about when the soldiers come back from the battle. They are wounded, bloody, and disturbed by what they went through. And one remembers the words "Thou shall not kill". An anti-war song.

This song is haunting because it came out during the Vietnam War where over 50, 000 American soldiers lost their lives. My brother, my cousin, and my first husband were lucky to make it home from that nightmare.

This is the single edit version. There's a longer version which includes the sounds of battle before coming back to the final verse. That version hits harder.

Oh man, this is an edited version that cuts out the best - and most emotional - part of the song! Why would someone butcher this tune like that?? As an Army vet, it always hits me in the gut, even though I served during relative peace time in the 90s. The song is an indictment of the entire concept of a military chaplain - a holy man or woman whose role is to ease your conscience about killing your fellow man.

This is the edited version. The full length version is much more impactful. This was the second iteration of the Animals group. The original group broke up in 1966 and Eric Burdon put together a new "Animals" group that was geared more towards the psychedelic sounds of the late 60's. Also check out "San Franciscan Nights" from this band.
