Why is it called the Navigational Bridge? Navigational Bridge is the term used to refer to a ship’s command centre. This is where you can find the ship’s wheel, engine and thruster controls, and all of the fundamental navigation and communication equipment used on ship’s to navigate the ship safely. But why isn’t it referred to as a cockpit like the command centre on aircraft, trains and spaceships etc? In this video, we'll explain why!

Good examples of the earliest "bridges" used on powered ships can be found on Brunel's Great Western 1838, Great Britain 1843 and Great Eastern 1857 -it can still be seen on the Britain in Bristol where she is preserved. HMS Warrior 1861 preserved in Portsmouth has a similar arrangement. Looks like this channel could develop into quite a good source of info.

i wonder if we're in the process of making up names for things right now that will last for centuries and not make much sense to future people. i guess it'll just seem like some obvious/natural thing to us and we might not even notice it. :-)
