A quick and simple way to confirm if gasoline is mixed with diesel

When ur old school grampa told you that diesel can run on anything that burns, which is basically true but not for modern engines

I learned the gasoline and styrofoam cup the hard way. I was draining fuel from my atv into a styrofoam cup only to notice it ate through it when it got all over my shoes. Not my proudest moment.

I've always poured a small amount into a steel tray and lit it on fire. If it lights it has petrol in it if it doesn't it's pure diesel.

Fun fact : mixing styrofoam and petrol in a bucket will make napalm

This is how to make homemade napalm. Dissolve Styrofoam into gasoline until you have a thick liquid that'll stick to anything and burn hot. Nasty stuff.

Or, ya know, just smell it. Gasoline and diesel steel completely different and you'll smell the gas even when mixed with diesel. Seen it the other way around many times where they (Oregon drivers in Washington) managed to fill their car with diesel instead of gas. They didn't take the hint the nozzle didn't fit and made it fit or held it out as they filled.

Or you drop a bit on a kleenex or something else, when it will dry fast and leaves no residues it’s gasoline, otherwise it’s diesel.
Or you put a few drops on a stone and light it up with a lighter, if it burns it's gasoline, if not it’s diesel.
There are so many, many, many ways. 😅

Saw a dude at a gas station, said he had gonna fill one of the XL cups with gas instead of buying a gas can cause he ran out of gas like a mile away. Gonna guess that he didn’t make the mile walk back 🤣🤣🤣

Conversely, if you think you have a mixture of Diesel in a gas car that is high enough to cause running issues but low enough to not readily be detected by smell, pour a small amount of the fuel on a blank white piece of paper. If there is any Diesel in it it will not completely evaporate. If it is pure gasoline it will completely evaporate leaving nothing or nearly nothing behind.

Diesel will also dissolve styrofoam.
First the level of the cup of the top of the liquid gets soft, then the rest of the cup below starts to melt

I once worked at a garage, where the assistant manager put petrol in his diesel car without realising. Took him weeks to figure out why it stopped running, stripping parts off etc, until one of us noted the fuel pump smelled of petrol. We all had a good laugh when he found his fuel receipts for that day. The guy was a bit of a stoner!

Also in my experience you can light gasoline with a lighter, but diesel doesn't. Just hold the lighter next to the filler cap and you can verify
