The Reverso Tribute Chronograph in stainless steel wholly succeeds in presenting a contemporary take on the original limited edition Chronographe Rétrograde, even if the verso side somewhat suffers from legibility issues.
This new sporty timepiece with a dynamic retrograde complication pays tribute to one of the most spectacular modern classics in Jaeger-LeCoultre rich archive of designs (the 1996 original was executed in 18k pink gold in a limited run of 500 pieces).
After celebrating the 60th anniversary of their iconic design in style, JLC released another five limited editions through the ‘90s that used the Reverso as a canvas to showcase their horological mastery.
Cal. 829 was built from the scratch and form-fitted into the new Grande Taille case (42x26x9.5mm), and it was incidentally the first fully in-house integrated handwound chronograph movement of the post-quartz age (preceding A. Lange u. Söhne’s L951.1 by a few years!).
The new cal. 860 takes full advantage of the expanded dimensions of the Tribute Chronograph (49.4x29.9x11.14mm) with an increased power reserve of 52 hours. This is even more impressive, since the simplicity of the recto side (a two-hander timekeeper) is paired with the openworked retrograde chronograph movement of the verso side that is now complemented by an extra set of hands. This ensures that timepieces indicates the time in correct clockwise fashion on both faces of the watch.
Jaeger-LeCoultre is rightly lauded for their legacy in making exceptional and innovative movements, but the pride they take as a manufacturer in executing such unique shades of color for the dial and their exceptional 5N 18k gold alloy really shine through in the contemporary pair of Reverso Tribute Chronographs.
