A "black widow" that is 3,000 light-years away from Earth has been seen by astronomers; it is a record-breaking cosmic object.
The heaviest neutron star known to date is a dense, collapsed remains of a huge star that weighs more than twice as much as our sun. One of the Milky Way's fastest-spinning neutron stars is the one that spins at 707 times per second.
The neutron star is called as a "black widow" because, like these arachnids, it has nearly completely consumed and torn apart the mass of its companion star. Female black widow spiders are infamous for eating much smaller male partners after mating.
The black widow is now the most massive neutron star ever seen thanks to its celestial feast.
