Waylon Jennings. At first his voice was smooth like Roy Orbison, but as he got older his voice had that hard edge to it from livin life, but still full deep and smooth. Shoulda been on the list. Marty Robbins gets another vote from me

Marty Robbins could sing and write songs that will be around for ever . The reason he had the voice to sing any type of music .pop country blues western and South sea island . A Legend .

I realize as I listen to this music there can never be a true number one. Too many great voices and the song can change your perception so much. I just thank God for the problem. American country music is the greatest music in the world, I think we can all agree on that.

Just a moment or two to reminisce. From the time I was a kid growing up - basically in the early 1950's and mainly the 1960's, I have "tons" of country LPs and CDs, so arriving at the 10 best is darned near impossible, but I can remember the first 3 country records I bought included Eddie Arnold, Jim Reeves, and Don Gibson (one whose name I did not see listed here on the comment section.) But looking back, there are so many I have had a chance to see in concert or on the Grand Ole Opry. Lots of great songs and singers along the way which also include a number of outstanding but less known vocalists as well.

Greatest artists this country has ever had! Wish this generation had the respect and experience these folks did. They earned their respect from fans because they truly love what they did. Didn't have managers that gouged the heck out of the public like they do now. Big time glitz and glitter, no heart felt music row. Tk God for the opportunity to have heard these great ones. I love this. This is like one of those Top 10 sports lists. It breeds discussion and argument, but basically it's a way to celebrate what we love, were entertained by, and celebrate the talents and  art of these singers and songwriters.
