Columbus fire crews working to contain massive blaze at auto scrapyard

Crews are working to contain a large fire that broke out at an auto scrapyard in southeast Columbus early Friday morning.

The Columbus Division of Fire was called to Columbus Auto Shredding at 2181 Alum Creek Dr. around midnight. The blaze was called out as a two-alarm fire around 1:30 a.m.


When crews arrived, the buildings were secured and no one was around.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen coming from the piles of debris at the scrapyard.

Battalion Chief Jefferey Geitter said the division reached out to the city to increase the water pressure in the area to help contain the fire. He added that it could be a while before the fire is contained.

Geitter said no buildings were damaged from the fire and no one was injured.

It could be days until investigators determined the cause of the fire, according to Geitter.

Geitter said crews deployed four devices to monitor the air quality in the area. According to AirNow, the air quality index is at 104 — meaning that the air quality will be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Columbus fire says the air quality monitors have not picked up hazardous conditions, but the agency encourages those with respiratory health issues to stay inside.
