We've been busy removing ash dieback tree's on the farm sadly they amount to a few hundred by the time we've finished. Obviously you have to take extra care with them. Good to see you and the boys out and about. Regards to you all

Oh wow, I've never seen squirrels do that before! I am so sorry, it's frustrating and heartbreaking, especially with them being in memory of loved friends and family. I wonder why they're doing that? Unfortunately really no way to save/protect them?

6 Reasons for Grey Squirrel Control
Number 1 The Threat to Red Squirrels:
Before the arrival of the grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) in the UK and Ireland, the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) thrived as the native species.
The introduction of greys in 1876 had devastating consequences.
Greys compete with reds for food and carry the squirrel pox virus, fatal to red squirrels.
Additionally, adenovirus transmitted by grey squirrels poses a significant risk to red squirrel populations Adenovirus also affects other small mammals like the Dormouse, voles, mice which has a knock on effect to birds of prey and Adders.
Number 2 Bark Stripping and Wood Consumption:
Grey squirrels strip bark from trees to access sap also can eat and digest wood and can get a food value from it which can impacting tree health and timber value
Despite similar behaviour from red squirrels, their dwindling numbers don't pose the same threat.
Without effective grey squirrel control, newly planted trees won't survive beyond 20 years, affecting ecosystems and commercial forestry.
Number 3 The Impact on Wildlife Diversity:
Grey squirrels' diet overlaps with that of red squirrels and other wildlife.
They consume tree nuts and seeds prematurely, reducing food availability for native species and affecting their reproductive success.
Additionally, they prey on songbird chicks, eggs, and potentially other vulnerable species like the young and hibernating hedgehogs and other small mammals leading to a decline in wildlife populations.
Number 4 Property Damage:
Grey squirrels entering residential spaces pose a threat to property, causing damage to roofs, timber, cables, and pipes.
Such damages are often not covered by insurance policies, exposing homeowners to financial risks.
Number 5 Public Health Concerns: Increasing human-squirrel interactions, especially in urban areas, heightens disease transmission risks.
Squirrel-borne diseases, including salmonellosis, Lyme disease, TB, and rabies, pose significant public health hazards, emphasizing the need for grey squirrel control.
Number 6 Essential for Red Squirrel Conservation:
With an estimated 3 million grey squirrels in the UK and the looming threat of red squirrel extinction within the next decade, grey squirrel control is imperative.
Natural solutions like the introduction of pine martens, which prey on squirrels, have shown promise in reducing grey squirrel numbers.
Trapping, shooting, and proposed methods like oral contraception and gene editing offer avenues for effective control measures.
The economic toll of invasive species, including grey squirrels, on UK woodlands underscores the urgency of conservation efforts.
Dedicated volunteers are crucial in the fight to save red squirrels, emphasizing the need for collective action from individuals, landowners, and policymakers to safeguard this iconic species.

Hey 👋 get farmer P in to sort your trees 🌳

Would it be an idea to get a forester in to have a look at your little forest, and have a chat about the future of this particular part of your land? It is usually money well spend.

I think you need some Scottish Pine Martens . They love to eat squirrels, especially the Fat American Grey Squirrels. They eat a few of the smaller native Red Squirrels but not many to effect them.😊

If greys have caused damage to your trees and then someone gets killed you will not be insured
Insures do not pay out on squirrel damage

I was out with my nearly 5 year old daughter, feeding my pheasants the other some to my daughter why too many squirrels are a bad thing and what they get up told her that you can eat them and they're pretty tasty was a Monday afternoon and a call from her primary school, asking why I'm telling my daughter false information about our wildlife!

Squirrels don't really have any preditors in this country, the expansion of the population is only held in check by the food supply, this is a big problem for the UK, I'm not sure what the answer is ...
