Great interview that shows the zillions of engineering decisions that go into designing these devices. Must admit that this arm ThinkPad is rather intriguing!

All they need to do to the thinkpad line is increase the keytravel to 2mm again. No one cares about how slightly thinner your device is because you don't notice those fractions of a mm when closed, but you DO notice key travel when ACTUALLY USING the device (which is what youre doing most of the time anyway). Thinkpads should cater to real use-case, not meanigless idle geometry. I guarantee Lenovo would get nothing but praise if they increased key travel at the cost of thickness. Thinness is a useless diminishing returns at this point.

Nice interview 👍🏽 I'm interested in the Arm based Lenovo laptop but I wish they offered a brighter panel than 400 nits. Lenovo typically tends to stick between 300-400 nit screens which gives me problems for outdoors or in sunny rooms. Any chance you guys could suggest they offer a 600+ nit screen? It would also give a better HDR movie experience on the go.

Great conversation! Looking forward to more like this. Also, hope you restart your Video Reviews on the devices you test along with blog reviews.

Well, I really like that they are using vegan leather. In combination with using a full AMD system, 1080p web cams, haptic trackpad, 16:10 screen aspect ratio, the attention to details with the packaging... it's so far my favourite of the newly announced laptops.

The 16" with the H processor, taking real advantage of the RDNA2 iGPU is gonna be interesting to say the list.

Just a couple of things, I would have preferred a 2K ish resolution for the 16", and maybe going all the way up to 90 or 99wh battery to really showcase Ryzen 6000 efficiency.

For the ARM version, it's looking great. Price had to go down as the MacBook Air with the M1 can be bought for less than 1000€. Multi-core performance is going to be below M1 and single core performance will be quite a bit lower than M1, and I bet the same will happen with GPU, but I'm still curious about the battery in comparison to M1. Plus this Lenovo has 4G/5G, touch screen, etc.

I've got 2 questions about the ThinkpadZ serier.
1, soldered Ram. if Soldered is there 2 channel ram? and or will there be change so you can swap ram sticks?
2, Display refresh rate. There is no info about this part but am assuming it's standard 60hz? will there be 90 or 120?

Thank you and this interview was awsome.

On the trackpoint comment - it's also great for developers who don't need a giant glass touchpad and want to keep their hands in one position and limit movement. Thinkpad touchpads were really bad for a long time but I suspect they have caught up. I'm really glad to see the trackpoint included on a lot of their devices still. I've gone so far as to convert to a tex shinobi keyboard.

Did Apple have a patent on their haptic touchpads? It seems like they're finally making their way into the non-Apple space, which is great to see.

Assuming it didn't adversely impact heat or durability or things like that, and the price isn't wildly higher, I'd totally go for a laptop with a wood (or wood-like) cover like that.

I actually cant think of some thing that is more sustainable than a cow. They are almost always killed for food, with every but it of meat used for something, bones used for other things, and hide used for other things. I doubt HP is out killing cows for leather and wasting a bunch of food.

Dirty Jobs did a great episode on the whole cow butchering process and I have to say, its impressive.

I would like to try the Z13, but I have no idea about the real battery life. This is extremely important for me. That's why I'm using a MacBook Pro 14.

Loving the laptops. Why are there no USB 4 laptops in the market?

Lenovo’s latest batch of AMD Thinkpad laptops are unable to boot anything but the Windows operating system by default.
This (redesigned) model comes with an AMD Rembrandt chip paired with Microsoft Pluton security co-processor.
“Trying to boot Linux from a USB stick failed out of the box for no obvious reason, but after further examination the cause became clear – the firmware defaults to not trusting bootloaders or drivers signed with the Microsoft 3rd Party UEFI CA key, ”
Be careful to buy the latest model, if you were planning to run Linux on it.

I'd consider the vegan leather option for the Z13 BUT....I hate the bronze color so much I ruled out that option...if it had silver rather than bronze accent I likely go with the Vegan leather. Other than that concern my question is how well with the vegan leather hold up over time? These synthetic materials are known to be subject to cracking. I could also see them getting scratched over time. So that is a concern as well. And of course the same durability concerns would be there on the other sustainable materials that were reference in this video...now if Lenovo came out with a 5 year built in warranty for these sustainable materials that would wipe away my concerns. Otherwise it's unlikely that I would go for one of these alt sustain materials. And I suspect that many other consumers share my concerns.

Why not just engrave on metal lid that it is 75% recycled aluminum?

I love z13. But why why why only small NVME card. With maximum 1TB? Really no space for it?
I am carrying lot of pictures and videos i would like to carry with me on the go. SD card can be too slow for the content.
Will stay with x13.
