As someone who is from Falkirk and lives near by it, I can say that it is indeed a marvel of Scottish engineering

I love Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 my wife and I did a 2 week outlander tour in August. I hung out with Shai Laboeuf randomly at a bar in Edinburgh. And we caught a glimpse of this ferry terminal on our tour. Such an amazing country.

Been there several times, theres a different in height between the 2 canals of 115 feet. From memory the actual lift from one canal to another takes about 5 minutes. Due to water displacement its in perfect balance and only requires the equivalent of boiling one kettle (their description while on the lift, not mine) to complete the lift.

I feel so privileged, I can literally walk through the remains of an old Roman fort from hundreds of years ago to get to this place, i can experience some of the best history lessons in a 15 minute walk it really is amazing

Went to Scotland a few years ago with my family in law, and my father in law suggested going there. As he told us there was this structure, I could not believe him that this thing existed. Great memories. It was a bit gloomy that day, but this did not take away the awesomeness of this lift. Since then, he has passed away from cancer, but I will always remember his curiosity about stuff like this and how he infects me with his curiosity and thirst to knowledge. He was someone who had an answer to anything and everything. He's such a smart guy, I really miss him.

That's real engineering that saves your time and make things easier for you. Serves the purpose of engineering.

The marvel is in the design of how it reduces the energy requirements by using the physics of counterbalance. This design can also claim in built safety over the elevator design as there are no lifting cables that could break.

I'm one of the Engineers who built it.
Although I've worked in projects costing 10 times more than this one, this one is the most prestigious
It's the only rotating lift boat in the world. The original design was a victorian wheel but later a meeting between the contractor, structural designer and architect decided to come up with a more millennium looks, also rotate it use energy as much as to boil an electric kettle.

We also have something like that in Germany it’s called „Schiffshebewerk Lüneburg in Scharnebeck“

Saw it the first time in 2005, then when all the family came with us from Australia 2010 we visited again. It is amazing.

They could've built some locks, but this fits in a smaller space.
