I first visited Bali in 2003 just after the bombings and thought it was amazing. I stayed at a gorgeous hotel [Swiss Belhotel in Nusa Dua] and hired a Suzuki jeep so I could explore the island. Went to Legian, Seminyak, Kuta etc - as well as Ubud and Tanah Lot. Because of the bombings - Bali was very quiet. But actually, I preferred it like that.
I always wanted to go back [with my bike] and eventually, in October 2023 I finally did. I stayed in a hotel in Legian [which was probably a mistake] but rode out to Nusa Dua, Canggu, Denpasar and other places. It was absolutely horrible!
Motorbikes everywhere and even though Indonesians are lovely people - every time I went out on the bike it was like Russian roulette whether I would get knocked off or not. The traffic was insane, and it would take me 3-4 hours just to do an easy 50k ride!
I couldn't believe how much this beautiful 'paradise' had changed - in fact I hardly recognised it! Bali is easily the worst place I have ever ridden my bike - and I live in Hong Kong!!
