I once fell for that lie that I should be shampooing less often to "train my scalp" to produce less oil. Long story short, I made the Malassezia on my scalp really happy and well fed. I'm never falling for those lies again 😂

Thank you so much, Dr. Dray, for providing us with reliable information for free. You make our lives so much better ❤

Thank you for the clarification (pun totally intended) on hair washing myths!! There’s sooo many people who will lecture you if you tell them you wash your hair everyday. Including hair stylists, mine has said, “I can’t believe your hair is so healthy even though you wash it everyday!” I believed the myths for years until my dermatologist told me that my dandruff was from oil buildup and I needed to be shampooing everyday. Amazingly everyday washes with good scrubbing of the scalp has made my scalp happy and even reversed my hair loss. I’ve made peace now with the fact that I am just oily (my skin is oily all over) lol

Thanks, Dr. Dray, for once again addressing the "hair training" myth. My longtime haircutter was a proponent of daily washing. Besides the buildup of sebum and product, she believed that hair is effective at trapping environmental pollutants, dust and allergens which are then transferred to our pillows while we sleep. If you suffer from seasonal allergies and don't want to wash your hair every day, she recommended changing your pillowcase daily. I'm a bit too lazy to follow either of her suggestions (I wash my hair twice a week; but don't use any styling products) but she owned a LEED certified "Green" salon, so I did respect her opinion.

Another tip was to rinse the hair very, very thoroughly and massage the scalp even before using the shampoo in order to break up and rinse out as much built up dirt/oil/product as possible first, so that I would, hopefully, only need one application of the very gentle but somewhat pricey shampoo I was using. However, she wouldn't hesitate to go in for a second lather if she felt it was needed. Her philosophy was healthy hair plus a great haircut are foundational, but your hair and scalp aren't healthy if they are dirty and/or damaged by toxic dyes and products.

Oily scalp here! I’ve gone from daily shampoo to every other day, which works until about 6 PM on day 2. Someone gave me a jar of a scalp treatment containing salt. Although I was probably too aggressive the first time I used it, it gave me an appreciation for how clean a scalp can be. Don’t use many hair products - just a spray on conditioner that I use only mid length to the ends. My hair is just too fine to tolerate a heavier conditioner or too much gunk. I continue to use the salty scalp paste twice a month in the summer heat and as needed during the colder months.

I was skeptical but drugstore shampoo saved my hair. Pantene volume shampoo cleared my oily scalp, and Dove dermacare antidandruff shampoo is creamy enough to hydrate and prevent dandruff.

Valuable info, especially with how many people don’t want to wash their hair for the sake of “hair training” 😅

I shampoo'd and conditioned everyday for years. My hair and scalp were always dry. I started washing my hair less a few years back and found the frequency that works for me (skipping 1-2 days), and also found a gentle shampoo and hair treatment that don't make me itch. I still get dandruff once in a while, but a clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks really help!

I have very oily scalp and thick hair. I stopped using conditioner in the shower. I just use shampoo and a leave in conditioner and serum after shower, my scalp stays clean a little longer… I’d love a video about best shampoos for oily scalps! Great video as always!

Wish I had known this when I was a teenager. These tips could have saved me a lot of aggravation. These days my hair and scalp are much drier. Happy Wednesday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a relaxing evening. ❤

As a woman who has PCOS, I can say definitely hormones can play a part in facial and scalp oiliness. There are drugs you can take that can cut the oiliness right back. I take spiranolactone, which shrinks the cysts and simultaneously took care of hair loss from head and oiliness.

I've been using the scalp scrubber that you recommended regularly and my scalp feels really good. It feels refreshed and clean with great blood circulation. I also think it helps the volume in my hair. I highly recommend it.

Once in a while, I see influencers pretty much bolster the idea that they only wash their hair once a week or once every two weeks, and I think ‘why do you think that’s such a badge of accomplishment?’ Wash your hair!

Bruh, the amount of times I listen to people telling me to not wash my hair often because you’ll produce more oils and overtime you won’t produce as much oils… I cannot believe I listen to them, now I lost so much hair

I washed my hair every single dingle day from the time I was 15 until I was 61! That was when I finally went in to menopause and my hair and skin turned dry. My hair looked it’s healthiest until I changed to washing it three times per week. In the winter, though, my scalp gets so dry from the cold air that it itches terribly, so as soon as the temps drop, i cut my shampooing down to twice a week un til mid-spring.
