I have an XM here in Philadelphia, USA and recently bought a set of new suspension domed from Mecaplace in France...made with rubber and not polyurethane. Surprised what an easy job it was. Changed them in front of my motorcycle shop on the street.

Checking the condition of the strut top is easy, when the car is at the lowest, see if you can stick a finger between the gap between the upper sphere and the edge of the firewall. If the gap is too small, raise it up and inspect crack underneath.

Great to see the XM back in the garage, I absolutely love these cars. I had a Xantia in the past, that was such an amazing car to drive.

Do you have access to the original manual to change the windscreen? If not, I can send you. Just let me know;)

That was stroke of true genius to find the code!! And also luck that the same numbers were used!

Your face was priceless when you hit on that combination (I never saw the original videos on this car)! Also the perfect car for that ramp in your storage shed!

Hi, so great to see the XM again. You were wrong to say that time caught up with the clever and complex Citroens - it was big, bad Peugeot that killed Citroen’s individuality and uniqueness. Good luck with the car.

Such a cool car! 😍
Those strut tops are available new and improved.
Check the Citroën XM forum in the Netherlands.

You could put the suspension in high mode, jack up the front and look at the strut tops from inside the wheelarch. Once you pull the gaiter down it should give you a rough idea of their condition. A severe case would be if they're clearly delaminating or there are large shock cracks in the rubber.

You inspire me to get my 1990 V6 going again, gearbox failed and back then it was too expensive to fix it, now it’s in a barn for several years and not sure what to do with it…

I had that keypad in a 1996 Peugeot 406 and there is a way to bypass it so you don't have to enter the code before every start. As far as I remember the bypass method was described in the manual/handbook that came with the car. It was an awful pain in the arse entering the code before every start.

Your comment at the end about the excess moisture from the tailpipe had me wondering from the second you started the engine. If you indeed hadn't started it for a year before that start you showed us, I find it hard to believe that there would be that much water expelled immediately as the engine fired. After a few seconds, yes as the warm gasses got pushed through.. sitting for a year I'd have expected any sitting moisture to have evaporated by now.
There are two things that come to mind. One is to drill a very small drain hole at the bottom of the rear silencer so moisture sitting can drain.
The second is to add a cooling system sealant. There is a product available here in Australia that I use as a preventative, it permanently seals engine block and head cracks and weeping/leaking head gaskets. You can leave it in the engine permanently with no issues as it uses a copper and silicate mix (i think it's silicate).
I'd be very suspicious about that much water in those particular circumstances. Probably normal in such cold weather with regular short trips, but not after a year standing.
If you cared to, or were concerned about that cars lifespan, I'd be doing a compressed air test to each cylinder. Air compressor pressure via spark plug with valves closed and see if the coolant rises. I had suspicions on my head gasket even though it showed no classic failure signs other than slow loss of coolant and this test confirmed it..
