Gov. DeSantis proposes eliminating property taxes

Gov. Ron DeSantis is proposing billions of dollars in property tax relief for homestead owners in Florida – and if he gets his way, that could be just the beginning. At a news conference in Orlando on Monday, the governor mentioned a proposal in the Florida House to provide $5 billion per year in sales tax cuts. DeSantis says he wants legislators to instead focus that relief on property taxes for homeowners who live in the state.

DeSantis is exactly right. Out of town folks on vacation and snowbirds are not the people of Florida. Those folks cost the citizens who pay property tax by needing more services on staff from the local and state government. That’s an easy question.

DeSantis is not escalating a feud at all. The Speaker would be escalating a feud with home owners here in Florida if he chooses to give vacationers, Canadians and or snowbirds a break on Florida residents backs.

Of course this would pass by 60% to get rid of property taxes. The one big issue I see is the people that are fine renting their whole life or living off our tax dollars to begin with, they don't care about property taxes. They own nothing but debt and then wonder why they are where they are in life. If the government passed no property tax atleast to your homestead property that would be great. I don't mind at all paying more money on sales tax. As DeSantis said, lots of touristscan pay it and not Floridians. I don't even mind paying property taxes on my rental which is a business to make money. My homestead however is where I raise my kids and will retire someday. Alot of older people loose their homes because money when they retired is not what it is today. Imagine losing your home you worked your whole life for and paid off, for a few thousand in a tax sale. It's terrible!! Let's get together who cares about politics and pass this when it comes to vote!! Let's look out for our older generation today that deserves it. Someday we will be the older generation and could be in the same position. 🇺🇸

A 4% dip in state spending will be Oh know! Over the past few years, our home budget has been cut almost 20% while our property tax bill increases. I agree with cutting the property tax. The sales tax is paid by EVERYONE that uses public services whether a resident or visitor, rich or poor, owner or renter, when making purchases. It is easier to decide whether a purchase is required or not. May have to put it off for another day. We all foot the bill of services and expenses fairly. Reducing property tax could bring home purchases closer for many. We always hear the call for affordable make the property taxes affordable. As far as state spending being reduces by 4%, make it happen!

Property for sure. You shouldn’t have to pay property tax. The state should get money from sales tax. Everyone needs food, shelter, and clothing. Those should not be taxed
