Hank Williams Jr A Country Boy Can Survive Lyrics
The preacher man says it's the end of time
And the Mississippi River, she's a-goin' dry
The interest is up and the stock market's down
And you only get mugged if you go downtown
I live back in the woods you see
My woman and the kids and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun, a rifle and a four-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk 'til dawn (Yeah)
We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
Ain't too many things these old boys can't do
We grow good-ole tomatoes and homemade wine
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
Because you can't starve us out and you can't make us run
'Cause we're them old boys raised on shotguns
We say grace, and we say ma'am
If you ain't into that, we don't give a damn
We came from the West Virginia coal mines
And the Rocky Mountains, and the western skies
And we can skin a buck, we can run a trot line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just Hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And I'd send him some homemade wine
But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars, my friend lost his life
I'd love to spit some Beech-Nut in that dude's eyes
And shoot him with my old .45
'Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
'Cause you can't starve us out and you can't make us run
'Cause we're them old boys raised on shotguns
We say grace, and we say ma'am
If you ain't into that, we don't give a damn
We're from North California and South Alabam'
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck, and run a trotline
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
A country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

What an incredible version of the masterpiece. Hard to believe how old this song is now. And what a blessing we still have Hank with us - one of the last living original TRUE country legends.

A song that set the path for so many young boys and teenagers when it came out
It definitely helped make me the man I am today
I wouldn’t trade my memories for all the Tea in Alabama 😂😂

HWJ's best song ever. It still rings true 43 years later. I love the fact that Hank was never afraid to change up the lyrics a bit but still preserve the spirit of the song when he sang it. Hank Williams Jr. Is always my favorite Country Music Artist of all time. Hoozah HWJr.

If you listen to the lyrics and Hanks words and feelings to this song, I as a Yankee think this is one of the greatest country song ever written and performed by a true legend!!! This is one of many, I know but it speaks volumes!! I farmed my life away up north but as a young man I spent 4 years in Texas about the time when this song came out!! I have never seen or met more hospitality and kindness by true Texans and also what they called Tex MEX back then. Wonderful people. I flew to Dallas a couple of years ago and rented a car to my old stomping ground. Everything was un-recognizable as the population and growth exploded!! But I still have my memories of the great state of Texas!!!

Dang Hank, I SELDOM if ever, have heard something that touched my SOUL like what you just gave us !!! I'm from Far North California, (always and forever Merle Haggard country). Up here in Redding, honestly about every 20th or so license plate we see, is from out of state (often out of country). It is a great joy for us to see cars from the South up here. Cause we KNOW they most likely they are "GOD, FAMILY and COUNTRY" folks. If you Southern folks are thinkin of headin' up this way, you surely are welcome. 'cause a COUNTRY BOY CAN

For all of you city people this is our anthem to you all. Between Charlie Danial’s and Hank speaking the truth to the concrete jungle rats. We are simple folk that don’t want to be messed with and if shit hits the fan we will survive
