The Netherlands in the 1920s in color. Colorized Video

As a follow-up to the previous much-watched film about Netherlands around 1920, beautiful images of the city and its harbors from almost a century ago can be seen in color! The original B / W film is motion and speed stabilized, restored and colored using modern A.I. software. The film starts with a beautiful panoramic shot over the old harbor followed by a panorama over the old town. Subsequently, extremely fascinating film images are shown of the busy activities in the port.

I am delighted that I saw my native town Leiden! There was more water and trams than nowadays. Memories come back to me of how it was, in the last century and now. I was born and raised there. The milkfactory ( the shots at the water with the milkcans) is where I was born. I reconized it. So many films on Youtube, but this one came up. Amazing! Loved to see it

This makes me think of my grandparents, and they continued always dressing so beautiful until their old days. My grandmother would have these skirts untill over her knee and I remember her shoes. She always looked so classy, even though she didn’t even try hard. She just toke care of herself and her cloths where always made with craftsmanship.

I wish I could talk to them now, at a later age. I would have sooo many questions to ask.
I am so curious about the past, and these video’s make me reminiscing over a time I never lived. But it helps me connect to my grandparents and the beauty of the Netherlands.

At 4:30 I think it must be Queen’s Day considering the flags, parades and celebrations. That must have been August 31, the birthday of Queen Wilhelmina, the reigning Queen at that time. You can see it’s midsummer there. Her successor was her daughter Queen Juliana whose birthday was April 30. In spring. At 5:10 you see a typical game that was played at Queen’s Day. At 2:50 we see Amsterdam Central Station and I think we see a royal carriage there.

Further I wanna say to the people with their nostalgic comments like ‘good old days’ and ‘back then the Netherlands was still the Netherlands’ I can clearly see in the images the class society that the Netherlands was then and if you look closely you can also see a lot of poverty. There were nothing good at those old times for a lot of people and we must conclude that progress has done the population good, despite the problems we are now facing.

If I'm not mistaken the town hall from Groningen was in it. Nice!

Mooi.

Impressive though this is, the technology still has a long way to go. This brown/purply look you get with things that aren't individually recognizable hasn't fundamentally changed all that much over the past years. Once it's possible to have the AI recognize separate buildings, items of clothing and so forth, and for instance distinguish between grass and tarmac surfaces because of context, you'll see much more realistic results.

The Dutch people had a lot of polar vortex in their purse, because there was a lot of poverty at that time. I don't want that back, but the video is nice.
