Eric Gorges, host of A Craftsman's Legacy has been carving wood for a little while. He says he likes the simplicity of working with just a couple knives and a block of wood. Relief carving, however, is a different monster. So, he headed to his local Woodcraft Store to pick up the tools and knowledge he would need to get started.

Armed with some basswood and a few new gouges he gets to work on his first relief carving. Check out the video to see how it turned out.

I am a leather worker primarily as a craftsman and ive done electrical and electronics as a career until health issues chased me into retirement. I have been a merit badge councilor for boy scouts and i am an assistant scoutmaster as well. i started carving at scout camps doing neckerchief slides and walking sticks but never really did it at home. The local senior center has a class so i signed up and now i go once a week and am begining a new hobby that doesnt take its toll on arthitis filled joints. now when leather becomes painful i can switch to wood carving and enjoy my artisan creativity in another hobby. I make a little bit of coin with leather but i dont think id make money at this, pure fun.

I would love to see a PBS produced wood carving program. Roy Underhill has had some guest woodcarvers on some of his Woodwright episodes, but it would be cool to see a program solely devoted to wood carving.
