A game of NHL 2K2 for the Sega Dreamcast, played on the redream emulator. Side camera, 5 minute periods.

If you're stuck in 360p, youtube really seems to be dragging it's heels when it comes to processing the HD version.

I just completed an entire season of this co-op with a friend and I must say, it might be ok in a one game sample but there are so many issues in a full-season mode. If anyone wants to play this, perhaps they'll find this review useful.

1. Scoring is very difficult. This is true for you and the AI opponent. We never found the secret formula to score consistently on the higher difficulties.

2. Awful flow to the gameplay. Your players will overskate the puck and it can be tough to tell who even has the puck. On All-Star difficulty, it's a stop-and-go frustrating mess.
3. If you want to make changes to the game play, it has to be done during a game and other than the difficulty your changes don't save from game to game. There is no way to change the default game settings in any menu outside of pausing a live game. This can be handy sometimes (changing the penalty frequency or adjusting the difficulty instantly if you find the gameplay too easy or too hard) but is mostly a pain in the neck for things like adjust the awful default camera or having a 2nd player choose a side to play on.
4. Full-season mode keeps track of limited stats. Playoff mode tracks virtually no stats. Playoff mode only tracks the top 10 of the entire playoffs in Goals, Assists, and Points. No team stats and no goalie stats.
5. Despite finishing in first place in our division and 2nd in the conference (we were the Canucks), once the regular season ended in Season mode, we got a message that read "The season is over and you did not qualify for the playoffs." We went to use the playoff mode to complete our season and we couldn't customize who makes the playoffs. Every time you "start new playoffs" it sims a real season and decides who makes it. Getting the 2001-02 Canucks into the playoffs took a dozen simulated seasons.
6. If you take the time to Edit your lines, they will return to the default if someone who was injured returns.

The balls of Sega to make better sports games than EA after EA ditched the dreamcast. NBA 2K, NFL 2K, NHL 2K, MLB, Tennis, etc.

So great.

Overall commentary on the game itself: NHL2K2 is a notable release as it was the last commercially released game in the US for the Sega Dreamcast. I can't say that it's aged terribly well, like a lot of sports games, but it does bring a lot to the table. The goalies are decent, resulting in lower scores than it's EA counterpart. The AI is serviceable, and this was the game that introduced the Advanced Control scheme to the NHL2k series, that would be heavily expanded on from 2k3-2k7, before being radically modified twice between 2k8 and 2k9/10.

This was also the result of the game being made by Visual Concepts, in line with the rest of the 2k sports game for the Dreamcast, as opposed to BlackBox, who made the first NHL2K. There was no NHL 2K1.

God the play by play is extremely cheesy “boy he sure did step into him” “he stepped right in front of him” 😂

The commentary in this game is insanely repetitive and not very good anyway, even compared to 2K3. You’ve heard everything probably 5 times by the time you finish your first game.
