This is the first episode in a new series for the channel called the Gouache Diaries, where I will share with you my experience, tips and self-learning, how to use Acrylic gouache.

This is a long video but I hope you find it informative to help you decide which brand is best for your art. In this episode, I compare four leading gouache brands. To see which will work best for the result I am after. Also, I share with you a technique I have discovered to create texture and what to do with remaining paint in the palette so it doesn't go to waste.

This video is my opinion and experience of the contents. Feel free to make up your own mind 😁 If you like what you see, please click on the 'like' button and remember to subscribe to see more videos. It helps my channel to be discovered and grow. Thank you.

With reagrds to Turners it is reccommended that you use water with it to loosen the paint. As opposed to the the other brands that you can use stright out of the tube. It was slightly painful watching you paint that first swatch.

I thought I would share with you I have been researching gouache more and more. I have found that the liquitex gouache is really just a matte acrylic ( basically their regular paint without the gloss added so it is more a entry level but worse because it can be misleading by being labeled a "gouache" and so it will not produce the vibrant effects that an artist may want or people will think that this is how gouache should be or is and it is not. But most people like it because they do not have to add water and can use it out of the tube. Just like you said! But it should stand as a "Matte acrylic" because for that reason it is not a true gouache it is a marketing tactic and misleads people. Turner is best when using a 2:1 ratio and takes a little learning curve but has more dramatic results but it is a hybrid and shouldn't really be thought of as a acrylic ( and doesnt quite act as one but it is easier than standard watercolor gouache.) and like anything will take learning. It is somewhere between watercolor and acrylic thus why it can bleed a little until thoroughly dry and should be thin layered.. This is an amazing comparison video though I have come back to this video several times! So thank you for doing such a great comparison on paper because I really like seeing the colors going down on the page to watch how they lay down just to be sure of information.

Apparently Turner are designed to be reactivated with water till 24 hours or so, and after a certain time they become water completely waterproof. Thats what the official statement says. I guess the ultimate test would be to paint them all on a plastic/canvas/paper surface and let them dry for days.

However since you enjoy LIquitex, check out the (Vallejo) AV acrylic gouache, they are way cheaper and they may be just as good as liquitex if not better in terms of opacity.

Wow this was absolutely fabulous. Exactly everything one could wish to see in the showdown of the differences of
Thank you for sharing your process and results and the awesome rubber cement texture effect at the end . I appreciated all of it, thank you 😄✌️🎨

Holbein permanency is the lightfastness rating of the colour not the water resistance. Permanent has 2 meanings, one is lightfastness rating and one is the water resistance.

As a beginning artist, I enjoyed this video very much. I learned quite a bit about acrylic gouache, and also laughed a lot! Your presentation reminded me a bit of Julia Child in the way she met the moment with such wonderful authenticity! I would like now to learn about true gouache, the original, and then compare. The acrylic must be a lot easier to work with. I love the vivid colors of all types of gouache. I will look for the next episode!

Ahhhh mixing the inks with white!! I have some of the muted Liquitex inks so I am def going to try that. I can't wait to see the lovely muted pastels they make.

Btw if you want a gorgeous copper paint, Jaquard's Lumiere light body acrylic Copper is one I'd recommend! Actually pretty much all of their metallic acrylics. So lovely!

Its nice to see someone using the paints how they would normally use them to see what they like. Just because a product is recommended to be used a certain way doesn't mean that's the only way to use it.

If your washi tape is ripping the paper you can try heating it up a little with a hair dryer or something and it should release a lot easier.

Turner is the Gouache most densely packed with pigment so a tube will last longer. You'll notice by comparing in the second column of the test sheet; the Turner does a better job of covering the black and tan squares when diluted than any of the other brands.

Just bought a nice box with 36 colors of "acryl gouache" of Turner... and I have the same disappointment as you. I need the resistance between layers because I alter trading card (Magic and Pokemon) and need to be thin layers. What I sadly only noticed at the almost final work, is that the wet layer was lifting the layer under. I could not describe the disappointment. My solution? Still using Vallejo Acrylics. I live in Brazil so I don't have so many options, so any imported paint is almost a piece of my liver or kidney 🤣
Thanks for the vid! If I need to try some new paint, I'll reach this Liquitex acrylic gouache that is nothing but matte acrylics

Try mixing the soft body with flow aid. Probably get the same effect.

Wow - this is a fantastic review! It’s incredibly helpful, because you really put them all through their paces. Based on your tests, it seems the Liquitex would be great for plein air sketching, it’s already a workable consistency, and new layers don’t reactivate what’s underneath. I’m hoping the matte finish will work ok in a sketchbook, as regular acrylic can stick to the opposite page. Have you tried that by chance? Thank you very much for the great video👌👏🏼💐

A clear gesso will give you texture. Unlike the rubber cement and tissue paper, its an artist quality product.

It's weird seeing the comments mentioning the necessary water to paint ratio for the Turner. Was this supposed to be common knowledge?

I was tragically born without this information and then somehow missed it again using this product in my colour theory course. The prof never mentioned this when she was instructing us to use these. The individual sale tubes have no usage recommendations besides the obvious stuff about cleaning up and washing brushes.

If you buy a can of frozen syrup used to make juice when diluted, it tells you on the can and is a totally different format. Chugging one would be hard to watch.

Not everyone does extensive research on how to use every item they buy first, unless they expect to need to do so. If the product has specifications that differ from others in the same category and fails to mention them, I think that counts as a bit of a design flaw when the lack of info prevents it from reaching its full potential.
