What is typology? As a fundamentalist Baptist Christian growing up, Steve Ray had a strong reverence for the Scriptures, and a basic understanding of Old Testament prophecy, but once he began to discover the Church Fathers, and their use of typology, the words of Scripture began to leap off the page for him. In our latest Insights video, Steve explains what typology is, and why it's so important for a proper understanding of salvation history.

I love typology. And it's not true that Catholics don't like the Old Testament. We LOVE the Old Testament. We know very well that in the Old Testament are all the prefigurements of the what is revealed in the New Testament. Not only that, we have Mass readings from the Old Testament at every Mass. The Old Testament is the Catholic Church's history. Without the Old, there wouldn't be a New.

That is defining typology in Christian only terms. There was actually a kind of pre-Christian Jewish typology. The details of creation are presented as types of the Aaronic Temple system. The deliverance of Noah is a renewed type of Adam & creation. The same is true of the People of Israel being delivered at the Red Sea. As those deliverances of the OT are types of Baptism as well.

The epistles and gospels read on the same day are typologies.

Do Catholics not like the OT, I thought that was protestants? In school and in Church, the OT is always mentioned alongside the NT

Certainly typology is a central feature in Bible prophesy and Messianic fulfillment. But just as analogy breaks down when carried too far, what prevents us taking typology too far and drawing unwarranted conclusions?

We have Old Testament readings in every Mass before the psalms, then the Gospel...I've always heard that protestants just have the New Testament, my brother turned Baptist and said he didn't need the Old Testament, in truth if you have a Bible, it's a combination of the Old and New

where does Steve Ray get the idea that Catholics do not like the old testament? where i am, all our Bibles have old and new testament together because the Church taught us that it's connected to each other - typology is the word. we always account the old testament when reading the new testament. that's why we do not carelessly read the Bible, as taught to us in Catholic schools.
but that's just probably me and most in my community, where leaders came from Catholic schools. those who do not like the old testament are probably those Catholics who only owned tiny KJV new testament only bibles handed out by Protestants for free and those who are not active in Church...they are the ones we need to catechize...

Catholics love the Old testament and New testament more than anybody. only because of Old testament there is a New testament. Anybody who understands the old testament correctly will be able to understand whats going on in the New testament and would understand everything what Catholic Church teaches and would become Catholics and would leave all the "solas"

The only amazing thing about this treatment on typology is that the idolatry of Mary could find justification in the old testament. This is classic Roman Catholic deception!
