Such a wide swing of emotions in this one. That dad's ohshitohshit reaction when the chick is hatching sooner than he expected. The elation upon the mother's arrival. The heartbreaking death of a chick. The other penguins expressing sympathy. The camaraderie among chick gangs. And finally the parents only slightly more free of their parental burdens.

There seem to be so many points in this breeding cycle we’re things can go terminally wrong for the chick, it is a real testament to the bravery and tenacity of these birds that any chicks survive at all.

In 2023, the ice melted early, before the emperor chicks could swim, and they all drowned. These penguin may be doomed due to climate change. Another antarctic penguin species lost all its chicks when it rained for the first time recorded there. The chicks' plumage is proof against snow but not rain.
