I’ve been a plumber for 16 years now. The first 12 I was non-union and switched 4 years ago. Wish I did it sooner. I got an 11$/hr raise. The union covers my my wife and 3 kids health insurance. The pension is astronomically better. Sure there’s still some BS, there’s always BS no matter what. I’ll take better wages, insurance, and retirement.

This was very informative and unbiased. I started a new job and some people are talking Union. Im doing more research, a lot whether for or against a union depends on individual circumstances. All I can do research and vote for what is best for me.

This is the best explanation of union vs non-union I’ve seen so far. If only more people would see the nuances of each side, there would be less division…in everything.

I have always been a union person and so was my late husband.. I have never understood working a non union job.. I am retired now and no regrets on union dues or anything else..The pay was so much better..

Ive been a commercial HVAC Tech working a non-union job for 5+ years. I just recieved a cold call for a union position (with accelerated service journeyman program) that will pay $21 / hr more than I make now plus health insurance covered and pension which I dont get. Total package is roughly double current plus two current union techs said they get $2 / hr raises per year with cowt of living adjustments. I would have to be low IQ to not accept the position.

As far as labor unions go in the private sector . Their is no comparison unions are by far the better choice .

Ibew nj wage 52 ph
Non union 25-40

Ibew 7 ph annuity,
Ibew pension
Ibew 5ph vacation check

Non union no retirement
Ibew total package 70 ph
Non union no wear close.

The choice is clear go union

How much do you make a week if your health goes down for about a year. A lot of places etc. pays 60% of you weekly income. What would you make with the Union

I think maybe classes in high school to teach financials, negotiation skills, and marketing should be lumped into one class to make sure people aren't so clueless about selling themselves short when faced with a job.

I’m good at selling my self and going on job interviews, and negotiating my wages .

But at the end of the day the electrical contractors set the wages in non union no matter how good at negotiating you are .

The non union contractor cannot and will not pay a journeyman in nj total pacage 70 ph it will not happen .

But the union is able to negotiate that wage Bc they have hundreds of skilled workers that they can use as leverage to help at the bargaining table .

nonunion just dosnt comeclose to that wage Bc all the marbles are in the contractors hands .

I’ve worked both nonunion and union and union has by far been the better option can’t even compare .

You were able to negotiate a pension for yourself for a non-uni9n company? I'm skeptical.

i am an electrician IBEW LU 817 . My biggest peeve is the no individuality, and the fact that i do more specialized work, but get paid the same as a bulb changer in the company. Other than that i prefer Union

Best explanation so far. I am truly a go getter. I worry that (as has happen to me before) I will over achieve and create tension with others by "making them look bad/lazy". I'm looking to start an apprenticeship in the Denver area and am struggling with what path to join. Is it a bad plan to go union at first (higher pay) and transition to private companies once I am licensed? Or would those 4 to 5 years be better spent building a relationship with the private companies

At my Job thats union the head Plumber was loosing many plumbers to jobs making 5$ more an hour. He would try and tell them the benefits like free health care and vision and dental and 30+ days off a year. They would still leave. I showed him the pension that we get and to get what im going to get at 57 with 30 years you would need to save around 9000$ a month for 30 years so you have to save that if you want to retire at the same lifestyle. So with free healthcare and pension, you might as well add another 50$ an hour that you do not see in your paycheck but you getting it. If you go for that extra 10$ an hour, dont forget to save a lot of it to have the same living standard when retiring, he has not lost any new plumbers, and now has no openings when where we work has shortages everywhere.

I feel you. However, going IBEW for me has added individuality. It’s helped me put the “journey” in journeyman. Same benefits, take my work where I please. Drag up if it sucks. Stay if it’s cool. In the open shop of the electrical trade it seems like the game is either be a company man or try to jump every 2 years.

you've been with them for atleast 10 years with the older contracts from like 10-15 years ago
Some unions are unnecessary like grocery stores, if you are skilled labor worker like a construction, welder or truck driver the benefits are great
Non-union jobs do tend to have more opportunities for full-time hours and overtime
