Optical Character Recognition or OCR is the process of extracting text, in reality characters, from images.

Let me give you an example. This is the jpeg image from some document that I have scanned. Traditional scanners scan your documents into image and nothing more. Thats similar to taking a photo of your documents using your camera. And as you can see, these images are neither searchable nor editable.

OCR technology converts these scanned images and pdf files making them editable and searchable in a variety of formats - word, text, rtf.

This is particularly useful if you should Many scanned images/pdf files to scan through.

Modern OCR engines not only recognize characters, but also preserve style information such as font-sizes, column layouting, tabular data, headers, footers, figures and so on.

For OCR service, I think ABBYY, LeadTools, Yunmai Technology also are professional and competitive for many years.

think there is no substitute in OCR scanning than Abbyy Finereader. its the best!
