A boy with severe epilepsy has become the first patient in the world to trial a new device fitted in their skull to control seizures.

The neurostimulator, which sends electrical signals deep into his brain, has reduced Oran Knowlson’s daytime seizures by 80%.

The surgery was carried out in October as part of a trial at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London when Oran - who is now 13 - was 12.
Epilepsy seizures are triggered by abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain.

The device, which emits a constant pulse of current, aims to block or disrupt the abnormal signals.

Incredible. My grandmother had suffered her most of the life having grand mal seizures. Seizures are so debilitating.

This is remarkable. It would be neat if it could be adapted to assist with motor neurone stimulation or to reduce Parkinson's symptoms

As an epileptic this is both thrilling and scary, I don't think I'm ready for a chip in my brain! Really happy for them though!!! ❤❤❤

it's not exactly new - VNS therapy (where a similar device is fitted to the vegas nerve) has been practiced to control epilepsy for years. Well done, surgeons!

The poor kid, more than 100 seizures a day! I'm glad that the device helped. Elon Musk's Neuralink it also working on something like this, which is supposed to be more advanced. I hope that these devices could one day make seizures a thing of the past.

How can his skull and brain grow to adult size if the implants are permanently fixed? Won't His brain and skull outgrow the device?

Wooow, this is a great achievement for humanity. Can we invest more in such innovations rather than in military might?

I'm reminded of Michael Crichton's 1972 "The Terminal Man"
