In a world filled with noise, distractions and chaos, a number of artists seek to push the boundaries of perception and experience. The Light and Space movement of the 1960s explored minimalism with a uniquely Californian spin — with a keen attention to the interaction of light and space. Crucially, the materials these artists relied on to create these perceptual experiences emerged from the postwar aerospace industry and its advances.

One thing that I felt was left out of this incredible episode was perhaps that a primary reason why a lot of people do not really understand this kind of art is because it cannot be captured in photos or videos in any way that does a justice to the masterpieces. I was always fascinated with Olafur Elliason after discovering him in a library book, the colors and objects were fascinating even in photographs, however, I did not feel the same excitement about the pioneering artists of this movement like the ones in this video UNTIL I experienced James Turrell's exhibition in Copenhagen. This was by far the most moving art experience of my life and I finally understood how the captivating magic of these artists can only truly be understood in real life.

Beyond that you also have to be able to slow down your mind to truly enjoy it, we are not used to enjoying the simplicity of light in a time where lights and movement are constant. Though I think this video did a pretty damn good job of showing the artwork if you ever have the chance to see any of these artists work in real life do not miss it.

A recent article about Robert Irwin in the NYTimes brought me to my initial discovery of Robert Irwin. This video is a very informative extension of that. Wonderful to learn about Helen Pashgian and to reacquaint with Larry Bell's art. // I am reminded of an afternoon when the western sky in my town turned to a distinct yellow color. It was something I had to experience, so I parked the car and spent a half hour looking at it. I noticed that no one else seemed to be interested in this phenomenal event.

Beautiful film about beautiful work. Anyone who denigrated these artists at the time were perhaps a tad envious of their living in the light, experiencing the sea and sky in such an essential way. I like the final comment, that art can be some sort of respite from the world and life in it, this work is other, it gives you space to be. Hats off to all the artists and the film makers who have captured it all so well ❤️
