We NEED a New License for the BENCHY

Why many 3D Benchy models were taken down from Printables - and the weird sequence of events that are still not clear. Even so, I LOVE the Benchy and I have no reasons to stop using it.

The Takedown of derivatives was a possibility since the beginning. But why now? The absence of a CLEAR public statement from Printables and NTI Group keeps the episode in an aura of mystery. It feels a lot like a regretful decision that nobody wants to clearly assume.

It is very likely that NTI Group owns the 3DBenchy. Why the 3DBenchy Website was out, and why the official 3DBenchy YouTube Channel disappeared remains to be understood.

❤I LOVE the Benchy and I will DEFINITELY continue printing them. What about you? 🤔

You think that's bizarre, just look at what Bambu Lab is doing to their users

What if I make a 3d model of a Sphere and release under no derivative license?
Could i prohibit everyone from releasing a 3d Model Including something akin to the geometry of a Sphere?
What about All Triangles?

This is madness.

A single Boolean out shape should not be a derivative as should something that is not in direct linage with the licensed file, like a remake from memory.
What if the 3d File structure itself is different and uses different formatting?
Like If I were to write a compiler and decompiler for a new and unique 3d File structure, that shares all automatically under CC 0.

Hopefully 3DBenchy will allow modifications that fit when and appear in the creation video, it's really important for 3D printing companies to test their products.

The liscence: "OK you can use this and sell it all you like forever, we give you full permission to use our idea"
Also the liscence: "hey wait what do you mean you want to change it a bit? It's completely free to make and sell as is, how dare you touch it and let other people make it?"

I really dislike this vague part of CreativeCommons license, it's hard to tell where are limits of their viral clauses.
Recently there was a big fuss with text-to-speech tools abruptly changing their licenses to CC-BY-NC because they were trained on NC data.
It's was also clear that people who gathered this data only use NC clause as a protection from potential court cases, not to enforce it.
Yet at least 3 groups had to make their products NC and using it for, let's say, Youtube narrative is technically might be a breach of YT licenses.
It's really hard to tell how far this viral part of CC licenses goes. And it comes with NC, SA or ND.

Fantastic video Everson. Top notch editing and storytelling.

No derivatives makes sense for a celebration tool, and I know why they did it, but taking it away now just doesn't make sense

Also @paulo-kiefe commented on another channel that it was Printables decision to enforce ND clause, not anyone else. Not him, not NTI.

I LOVE the video.
I have printed dozens of Benchies in my life and I will do it again for sure. It's like a banner of who we, makers, are...

We need people to start *respecting creator rights* and licenses. Licenses are *given* _by the creator_ - if she/he/them wants to.

In this case the creator didn't, and he had many years time to change the license if he wanted Benchy to be free.

Freebie printing community cannot demand anything. Community members can create their own models and let them free (for someone else putting their own name on them and loading them to MakerWorld - getting reward for every download) 😅

Bad analog: if one cop doesn't stop you for exceeding speed limit, another can, and fine you. First one didn't give you pardon. But that's not by license but by law.

I think if it came to the courts then Precidence would take over some how. The company never enforced their license for years untill now, therefore that portion of it is void. Not a lawyer, but similar to how some IP owners will sue, then confiscate, then destroy cars people made to copy the car from their IP.

Seems as though maybe the original creators had no idea how big bench would become and put little, if no thought into the license. Like me, I have published things to thingiverse that I could care less about what anyone does with them... So I more or less "yeah whatever'ed" the license.

Gee. I wonder of the guy who made via really big 3D Printer and put a motor on it and floated it with his wife in a lake. Motored around the lake

Easier just to kiss this model goodbye and use another that allows remix uploads etc...
People don't want to deal with this patent BS!

Isn't benchy obsolete now as a calibration tool? Almost everyone buys bambulab (mostly bc of the price) and every bambulab prints benchy without any problem.
Nobody will produce and sell a 3d printer if it can't handle benchy ;)
